Capture 1 Sharpening

There's a great deal going on about C1 and the M8 at the moment - I've been trying out versions of C1 and C1 Pro with my DMR against Lightroom - grateful if anyone could give me an opinion on the following:

Subjectively, C1 Pro and to a lesser extent C1 LE seem to produce a sharper result when converting DNG or RAW files than conversion either by Lightroom or the RAW converter plug-in for Photoshop - is it the case that C1 is 'doing a better job' by finding more detail in the image, or is it the case that more agressive sharpening techniques are being applied by the software - or am I just seeing things ? :p

After all it is Haloween...

Bob--

Good observation.

I can't answer directly but I remember when E Puts did his R9/DMR review there were some comments on this forum that the images he posted 'looked oversharpened.' When I raised a question about that, someone responded that C1 tended to be a bit more aggressive in sharpening than some other products.

Sorry to be so vague. Someone with better knowledge will certainly respond.

You are not seeing things. CaptureOne does a MUCH better job with micro details -- it's like having two different cameras when processing with different raw converters.

Don't have m8 files of my own to report results on, but you should know that C1 sharpens even when the sharpening is set to zero. There's a separate "properties" dialog in which you can set "suppress sharpening" if you want to get a baseline to see if you are doing too much or too little. In many cases, using the "soft look" is very advantageous. Again, try the experiment.

It would help if people who report their settings in C1 (Sean, too), not say "default settings were used" for things like noise filtering. These change from time to time, and if you change them yourself for one picture, they stay changed and do not revert to their default values, so it is easy to forget what the default is. I have seen successive releases of C1 arrive with the default setting of the color noise filter on the first tic, then on the third tic, and so forth for a given camera.

Thanks for the heads up on the "properties". With these kinds of tips, I might even be half prepare when My M8 arrives:D

Thanks everyone for your insights - as for my own experience, I've found that C1 seems to give a better result but Lightroom is easier to use.

My biggest problem with C1 is the fact that any change of settings is global and stays like that for the whole shoot unless you reset them.

Still, all part of a learning curve....
