C1 and getting started on a Mac

Morning let's see if i can help some folks setup C1 correctly for the M8 . I am hoping to get one soon , have my name all over the place on lists but nothing yet , soi will use my DMR filesto get Set up . I am going to suppose you already figured out how you got your images in so lets get right to color manaagemnt first. let's open C1 and bring the images in. Than under preferences we will start. I will just use M8 stuff to avoid confusion. Hit the camera tab

Okay in the camera tab pick the M8 for the camera than the profile use the M8. I didnotice the M8 profile is more magenta than the R9 genric . If your having magenta issues, try the R9 generic

Now go to monitor here and pick the correct resolution of your monitor . Mine is a 30 in display

Now hit thge color tab in the monitor and make sure you pick the calibrated monitor setting that you did with your Eye one Display or you Spider display setting . Mine is named Monitor 30 _9_9_06 which is the date that I calibrated my monitor. can't tell you how important it is to have a calibrated monitor before anything else. Without it you will never have anything right

Okay than go back to the Color Management preferences an hit destination. I use Relative Colorimetric. Notice if you hit the info bution in C1 youget the Meta data which i did here for illustration

Now the profile management setting is just picking the camera's that you will use . Now you can play with the rest of the settings on how you like to view C1 and naming of files if you want. i won't get into that part . So now lets move on to color space and processing

Okay here is were the rubber hits the road. When you hit the processing button you are served up this menu usually on the opposite side. Now C1 has on the top some settingsalready there but I added a few to what I do on files. Now if you check more than one at the top it will also do those files also . So you can process a high res Tiff and a low res jpeg depending on what you want to do. Let's concentrate on the best image quality right out of the shoot.

Now notice on my selection of the High quality title that I have checked . i have some unusal stuff going on here . First lets pick Tiff and 16 bit and really you should be working in 16 bit and do all your work on a 16 bit file , like sharpening and stuff like this and if you want reduce to 8 bit after all that work is done and go to print.

 

Next is the profile , mine here is a custom profile from Joseph Holmes it is a very wide color space, i would use ProPoto RBG if you don't have a custom one get as much color depth in the files to work with.

 

Notice I also uprezed my DMR file. I found this works very well in C1 and the Max i go here is 150 than if more is need than I do it in PS or other software programs

Now look at this when I hit the profile button , look at all the choices I have some are custom but a lot are standard . So pick ProPhoto RGB as a good wroking space. Now you need to take the same working space into PS

Now that should at least get you in the right direction for color management. Now we need to go into PS and make those changes there also. So open CS@ or any version of photo shop and look for color settings.

 

Now look at what is setup in PS the RGB setting is the working space that i am working with so for me it is that custom profile the Dcam4,J.holmes working space. if this is a mismatch between C1 and PS than your files will look different. Make sure you have this the same as C1 which we Said Prophoto RGB is the widest standard color space, than follow the restof the settings there if you want

Now that should get you going in at least the right direction and everything between the 2 programs should be a match.

 

Skipping ahead if you bring a image in with the Prophoto space and you want to post to the web than you need to convert it to srgb. That you will see under edit in PS but let's stop here for now so at least you can everything setup correctly. now on Windows it is basically the same idea just it is setup slightly different and the look is different. Funny for the same software it is a major difference in they way they operate. Thanks and i hope this helps some folks.

BTW there is also another wide gamut space that you can work in and that is Color match . Now after all your work is down than you can convert back to Adobe RGB for printing or to send to clients

Great and that was exactly what i was hoping. We can get into some more stuff after folks get the basics down and start working with it.
