Don'tknowmuch Posted May 25, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello. Tomorrow I'm going to phone up a shop or two I've found that have a summaron 2.8 for sale. I don't know anything about any lenses other than the Elmars I own, and would welcome pointers. In particular are there any questions I should ask on the phone? It is for use on my M2, and would be permanantly fronted by a filter and hood, though I also don't know a lot about which hood etc... Yours gratefully in advance, Jim.
Advertisement Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Hi Don'tknowmuch, Take a look here Summaron f2.8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted May 25, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 25, 2009 Excellent lens. Brilliant value for money. What more is there to know? I have example shots taken with mine on here if you do an advanced search.
Nando Posted May 26, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 26, 2009 Excellent lens and very high resolving. One of my all-time favourite Leicas. It's one lens that I don't think I'll ever be able to part with. I have the goggled-version for the M3. One has to be a bit careful because of flare. I use the 12585 hood on it, which conveniently works with my 50f2 Summicon II and 50f2 Summitar as well. I haven't used my Summaron in a while because I sent my M3 for a CLA and a repaint. I like using it with the newer, lower-grained 400ISO films like the 400CN. As for the questions to ask, just ask the usual. If possible, try to examine the lens in person. Make sure that it's the non-goggled version. The goggled version will work with your M2 but you will be dealing with a dimmer VF and extra bulk. The Summaron 2.8 is not a hard lens to find so if there is something that you are worried about with the particular lens you are considering, walk away. There will be better ones. earleygallery Posted May 26, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 26, 2009 There is a very nice one for sale in the buy/sell section right now
Mountaineer-American Posted May 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 28, 2009 I have the non-goggled version that I use on my M2. Bought it used & had Sherry Krauter give it a thorough going-over. I very much like the results on Tri-X at f/4 and f/5.6. Have made Tri-X my standard film for this lens. Tried it with Portra 400VC but did not like the prints, the color looked phoney. Other lenses have not given me this effect on Portra. "Don't start half-vast projects with half-vast ideas."
Don'tknowmuch Posted June 5, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted June 5, 2009 Thanks all. Just got back from a trip and found Summaron waiting! Haven't used it yet, just wanted to see if anyone can help with something. The M bayonet (I have an M2) sure enough clicks the lens to top -centre as far as the focus-indicator is concerned, but the aperture dot is not on centre; it's at about 1/2 past 10 if looking at the front of the lens, to the right from behind the camera. Is this normal? I ask in case it indicates, maybe, sloppy cleaning/re-assembly or something? The aperture adjusts ok, and clicks, and is wide open when 2.8 is adjacent to the black dot on the lens barrel, so I'm not unduly worried - more curious than anything really. Jim. andybarton Posted June 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wouldn't say that's normal (I have sold two in my time, and don't recall either of them being like that), but the important thing is that it focusses OK. Lovely little lens... very similar in looks (as an object) to the 35 Summarit.
Don'tknowmuch Posted June 5, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted June 5, 2009 Mmm... Thanks Andy. I thought it was odd. If there's no problem with it in any other respects then I guess there's no problem, but I am concerned it shows that something untoward is going on. Maybe some self-help repair or cleaning. I bought it from Red Dot Cameras in London and I'll ask them what's occuring. Jim.
