Tuning the LC1 to get Digilux 2 jpeg output?

Last weekend I returned from my first prolonged usage of my Digilux 2. I touted it around in the capital of Scandinavia: the stunningly beautiful Stockholm. I thoroughly enjoyed the silent shooting only later to notice that it emits a red light when turning on... No wonder that lady in the metro was aware I was shooting her :D

After chalking up a bit more than 2000 captures I am utterly in love with my Digilux 2. So much I am considering a backup. But just for the sake of variation I am thinking about getting an LC1.

I have read here numerous times about the difference in output in jpeg between the D2 and the LC1 and started wondering if it is possible to tweak the settings in the LC1 to get closer to the D2? Has anybody who owns both tried that? I do not want to go raw with these cameras.

Thanks in advance,

Purpledot

It would be an 'interesting' exercise.............and maybe a software guru could comment. To my knowledge neither L or P have ever issued a firmware update for the D2/LC1.......but if they did, would the Leica firmware install on an LC1 to provide quasi D2 jpeg's? Mmm....... ah hae ma doots.

It's an interesting thought, but I doubt it'll ever progress beyond that.

I have both. To be honest, while there's definitely a difference, for the most part it's almost negligible. It's almost not a matter of better or worse... simply different. I prefer the Leica output... but I'd be hard pressed to find fault with the Panasonic.

IMO

Thanks both - I was only thinking about things like contrast, sharpness and saturation via the camera's menu. But a firmware fix sounds interesting :D Not likely, probably. And although I do admire the guys who have taken their cameras apart, I am not that brave :o

Well,

Nice to hear you liked my home town...:) About the first thing I did when I got my Digilux 2 four years ago was to buy some adhesive aluminum foil in a model shop, and cover that pesky red light (plus the red dot and Leica name for good measure...Sacrilege!:o) The foil is still there; it even survived a sensor change by Leica...

Well, honestly, IF you´re "utterly in love" with the D2, and IF you fear that the LC1 images need tweaking to bring them up to Leica standard (can´t say if it´s really so), then WHY get the Panny "just for the sake of variation"? Get another D2 and stop worrying! Or else, accept any image differences as part of the variation you´re after....

"I´m utterly in love with my wife, but I´d like a mistress just for the sake of variation".....:D

It's hard not to. Even harder, as a native Copenhagener, to admit Stockholm is "slightly" more interesting, photogenic, cleaner, greener, cheaper (flats aside) and with better public transportation. On the upside we are generally ruder... Oh, not to mention your wind which really rivals the Danish edition. It can be utterly cold in Stockholm even in May - and I saw dozens of Southern Europeans shivering in the cold who seemed hell bent on not putting on an extra blouse. I, on the other hand, bought a beautiful blue/yellow sweatshirt which I am sure will offer me plenty of free beer the next time I visit Copenhagen  and a few invitations to return Skåne, Halland and Blekinge when I'm done with them...

Good idea. Beats my 3M solution.

Ah, but that logic is wrong ;) It would be "I'm utterly in love with my wife, but I'd like her twin as my mistress just for the sake of variation" :p sticking with a second Leica that is.

On one of these forums, someone posted a Photoshop recipe for getting the Leica glow from a non-Leica camera. I haven't tried it, and don't remember whether you needed to start with raw, but there weren't many steps to it.

Thanks - I'll try searching for it - should be easier with that lump of glass :D
