This is Tornado, recently completed at Darlington works, built to a 1947 LNER design, leaving Grosmont for Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. I grew up around the railroad (Baltimore and Ohio RR) and can still remember them. I have often wished that I could go back in time to record the old engines for history. It was taken 3 weeks ago with a V-lux 1. The locomotive really is brand new. After the end of steam on British Railways in 1968, examples of many classes were preserved; many more were bought back from the scrapyard, and subsequently refurbished. The LNER 'A1' Pacific class designed by chief engineer Arthur Peppercorn lost all 49 examples to the scrapman, but in the early 1990's a trust was formed to build a brand new one at Darlington from the original LNER drawings. Most people said it couldn't be done, but 18 years and £3,000,000 later (all from donations), 60163 Tornado steamed on to the British main line. Arthur Peppercorn married late in life; his wife was much younger than he, and as a spritely 93-year old, she is still active as president of the trust. Tornado has already made mainline trips between London (Kings Cross) - York - Newcastle - Edinburgh, the original haunting ground of the A1 Pacific. The visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Grosmont and Pickering was its first visit to a preserved railway. David. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
