fboyd Posted November 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently purchased a Panasonic L1 which is going to be the D3, is we all know. I am a professional freelance photographer, who normally shots with Canon Pro gear. But I have to admit that I love this camera. I stated my coments in another post on the D3. I am uploading some images, mostly with a lot of dark backgrounds for those who were concernced about the image noise in the shadows, I have heard complaints of this. All shots were made in Raw Mode, and then imported converted to DNG and opened with Camera Raw 3.6. No Image adjustments were made in Camera Raw except Color Noise set to 25. The images were then filtered through Noise Ninja with a camera profile that was previously made, minor sharpening was applied. Camera settins had NO noise reduction or Sharpening. carstenw Posted November 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 4, 2006 Would it not be more informative to post before AND after images, so everyone can see what the situation is?

fboyd Posted November 5, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted November 5, 2006 Let me apologize, I hit the upload button and left to go out. I have added a link to some images. Per the request, I have posted one image with no processing just convert from raw to Jpeg and then saved and then the same image converted, Noise Ninja, Auto Level and sharpening. Yahoo! Kirk Posted November 5, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 5, 2006 Fred, thanks for posting those nice images. I would like your opinion regarding two concerns I have with the L1. 1. Size. I have not seen the camera in person, but from what I can tell it looks big and heavy. Especially with the standard 14-50 lens. 2. Only 7.5 megapixels when the competition is 10 MP or higher. philipotto Posted November 5, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 5, 2006 2. Only 7.5 megapixels when the competition is 10 MP or higher. Megapixels are perhaps one of the least important considerations in a camera. The sensor size is. If there is a place where the L1 is lacking in the specs its its 4/3 sensor vs the norm DSLR APS sensors. Look at the crop factor of the lenses. Most DSLRs are 1.6-1.3, the L1 is a fulll 2X. That being said, im sure the L1/D3 will surpise us with results that are better than the specs would suggest, just as the LC1/Digilux 2 did. Olympus has some interesting fixed F2 zooms that look interesting. Olympus claims they are the first F2 zooms.
fboyd Posted November 5, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted November 5, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I might be biased because I am use to have a bag that is very heavy or a roller bag when you load up Canon 1d's and L series lens, that stuff is heavy. I will not lug it around unless it is for work. On the other hand I think the size is perfect for me with the L1, it is not light, it just feels solid, like it is meant to be used by pros. I carry around the camera all of the time since I purchased it. And it has not been a burden. In the bag I carry with me, I have the camera and Leica supplied lens and the Oly 7-14 which is a hefty piece of glass, a Sekonic light meter, Video Ipod and Cable to download photos and a Palm TX for notes. All this is in a Black M-Classic bag, which is a great shooters bag, and I am off and running. When I made the descision, to buy this camera the choice that I also looked at was a Canon 5D, because I wanted even more wide angle shots. Now, I know I could not have made a better choice, even with the size of the sensor. I know what I am using my camera for and the end results is to sell photos, for me. I rarely enlarge anything over 20x24 and to be quite honest, I never had a problem selling this size to customers when I shot with a Canon D30 nor have I since then. If you expose the image right with this camera size prints should not matter.
Riley Posted November 5, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 5, 2006 my feeling has always been that the photosite density of the 'smaller' sensors will become a non issue. but i do recognise that for the moment it is the defining factor between full frame and the rest. a careful look at the fuji F30 will reveal to you that its tiny 1/17" sensor is able to operate at 3200 iso, giving very classy resultes at 800 and 1600. it seems to me that technology will beat this problem, if it hasnt already. then the only game in town will be lens resolution and sharpness Riley
Kirk Posted November 5, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 5, 2006 Megapixels are perhaps one of the least important considerations in a camera. Well Phillip, if that's true, I guess you are using a 2 Megapixel camera.
