SD cards won't mount

When I purchased my new DL4, I bought two high-speed Panasonic SD cards as well. I formatted each in camera, but couldn't mount either in Mac OS 10.5.7. To be sure tried a different card reader and a second computer (same OS) with the same result.

When I inserted an older SanDisk Extreme III SD, originally formatted on a Canon EOS, the volume showed fine on the desktop. I then reformatted this card in the D-Lux 4, and it still mounted fine.

Thinking I had two faulty Panasonic SDs, I returned to the store and exchanged them for two new SanDisk Extreme. Now the new cards don't mount either.

Has anyone been here before?

Don´t know if it´s even remotely related, but.... I use SanDisk Extremes as well, in a SanDisk USB card reader connected to my MacPro under 10.5.6. Now, if the empty reader is already connected and I insert a card, at least half of the time the OS fails to "see" the unit (the blue light on the reader itself comes on). If I start by removing the reader from its USB cable, insert the card, and then connect the reader again, the unit mounts perfectly every time.

Try it, it just may work...

This may be a silly question, but if your new cards are SDHC (Most cards over 2GB are SDHC these days.) are you using an SDHC card reader? Both types will work in the DL4, and SD cards will work in an SDHC reader, but SDHC cards won't be recognised by an SD card reader. Just a thought. :)

Buy a PC!

LOL! That would be like kicking someone in the nuts to make them forget they had a light headache. :D

I also think it is your card reader.

I have a cheap little Sandisk MicroMate SDHC reader. Notice that it specifically says "SDHC".

I've tried every possible sequence, changed cables etc: no go. I have a feeling Nicole's nose may be pointing to the source of my problem: the card readers. It's the old 1GB card that works. The new ones don't, and both of my readers are years old.

Thanks for tackling though. :-)

Mais oui! I think you win the grand prize, N. The new cards are indeed SDHC, and the old card isn't. My readers are old as well. I should have used a magnifying glass when I bought the cards, to tell one from the other.

Off to the store, again, grr.

Muchas gracias, Nicoleica!

Yes, I think you're right (on both counts). Thanks,

ZZ

Hi, I'm pleased to have been able to help. It's an easy thing to miss. Just in case you use CF cards too, the same situation exists with UDMA CF cards.

If you use Lexar SD cards, they have been giving away free SDHC readers with many of their cards recently.

Good luck, and I wish you lots of enjoyment from your DL4. :)
