Leica D-Lux 4 Finder and Glasses?

I have a DL4, but do not have an external finder. I have to say that I do not see the practical use of the external finder, unless one uses preset manual or hyperfocal focusing, and one uses only one preset focal length for the lens. This may be fine for street shooting, but for all other applications one still needs to confirm focus by viewing the real panel LCD. The DL4, like all P&S cameras, is not a speedy focuser. Therefore, one can not trust that the camera has focused itself unless focus is confirmed by viewing the rear panel LCD. For these reasons, I wear my reading glasses whenever using the DL4. An eyepiece with an EVF would show focus, composition and not require reading glasses, but that will have to wait for the DL5 or M9...

Proud new D-Lux 4 user. I was thinking of buying the finder for it and wondered if anyone can tell me if it is worth it if you wear glasses i.e. will I see the whole image in the finder?

I wear glasses and find the VFimage extremely clear

Yeah, I go back and forth on this one. The finder will allow me to feel like the DL-4 is more of an old fashion manual leica (and I like 24mm the best and am not a zoom fan), but on the other hand, is it really practical... haven't decided yet.

I use the SBOOI regularly, with and without spectacles, with the LCD screen turned off. Focus is confirmed by a small green blob that appears at the top edge of the LCD screen even though it is turned off. I use it like this regularly, and in all except very bright light (which is one of the times when an external finder comes into it's own) you can see the green glow at the periphery of your vision.

Regards.

I didn't know that... that's great to know and makes complete sense.

Yes, I can with progressive spectacle lenses.

Also, the Leica 24mm D-Lux 4 viewfinder has a rubber ocular surround that prevents the scratching of spectacle lenses.

More general info: The D-Lux 4 finder, as supplied, is somewhat different from the illustration on the Leica product web-site. The optical configuration seems to have been revised before production began. The optical housing is of synthetic material but with a metal foot for fitting into the accessory shoe. The 'illuminated projected' frames in the finder are for 24mm, with an additional 0.7m parallax indicator, and 35mm. The projected frame application may well be the same as that used in the 24mm Leica Viewfinder-M (where 35mm = M8 field of view.)

On the otherhand, the Lumix LX3 viewfinder (DMW-VF1) has a different optical system from that of the D-Lux 4, has an illuminated projected frame for 24mm with a parallax indicator for near use. This finder does have a metal body but is fitted with a synthetic foot. The frame lines are somewhat finer than in the D-Lux 4 finder. As this viewfinder does not have a rubber ocular surround - its usefulness with spectacles will be rather more limited.
