I suppose that quite a few of you have seen that Red Dot Cameras currently have the new Pradovit projector on demo from today until the 29th? Well, this morning (apart from giving a final hand to Ivor to complete the setting up) I saw the simply stunning results - it's quite superb.

I would urge anyone within reach of London to pop in and see for themselves. I don't suppose Ivor would mind if you brought your own photos on a DVD - but they would need to be very large (3000 x 2000 and high quality if I recall Andreas' spec. for the Hessenpark pics.).

Correct me if I am wrong, but the native HD resolution of the projector is 1920 x 1080. The maximum pixel size required to display the highest definition image is in fact only 1920 by 1080. (Large pixels are only required for photo quality prints). Unfortunately if you wish to display a portrait mode image the longest length becomes 1080, in other words smaller than the landscape image. It is a shame that the imager of the projector is not a native 1920 x 1920, allowing high resolution portrait and landscape images in true HD resolution, just like it is in analogue world. The PC grapgics card would also need to produce 1920 x 1920. But as the projector costs 8K I guess that a 1920 x 1920 size sensor would have added to the cost, but it sure would have been a first in digital projection. Have I given you an idea Leica?

At 8K I think I will purchase a large LCD TV instead and buy an R10 and A/F lens with the saving.

The projector has a native resolution of 1920x1200 according to the Leica site: Leica Camera AG - Photography - Pradovit D-1200 so it is better than HD.

Sorry, my mistake. The image is 120 vertical pixels bigger than I originally stated. All else remains as I stated before. Playing a Blu Ray disc at 1920 x 1080 would not use 120 vertical pixels of the projectors capability. Also, displaying a 3:2 aspect ratio image at the maximum possible size would mean using 1800 x 1200 pixels (missing 120 horizontal pixels of the projectors capability). Using the maximum 1920 horizontal pixels would require 1280 vertical pixels, so the projector would cut off 80 vertical pixels.

So, in theory the projector is 'better' than 1920 x 1080 HD, but it is not possible to use native aspect ratios of Blu Ray's 16:9 or camera's 3:2.

:-)

Depends on your definition of large. They had it at Photokina and my guess is the image was 6m diagonal. Now where's that catalogue of 200" LCD TVs on special...

I also think you're under-estimating the likely cost of the camera-formerly-known-as-R10 and an AF lens for it.

Agree with Brian, though, the projector is superb.
