Mantice Posted May 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I creat this thread not to repeat all the R10 threads that has been discussed before, but only discuss if Leica have intention of creating R10 with auto-aperture and fully ultilize R-cam. (not R10 wanna-be) Admin feel free to delete if you really think this is redundant. I hope Leica will take opinions from this thread I am really anxious about digitalize my R6.2. Leica manual R lenses has official discontinued and there aren't many quality photo labs around here anymore. Not that I can't wait for R10 but personally sooner or later I will need to replace film Leica had a move of using digilux-3 as digital replacement before; and they also have DMR. The digilux-3 move is obvious not a smart move. What do you think? Will Leica R10 commit to backward compatibility or will it be just another step-down replacement? If step-down, 5D is pretty cheap now when MKII arrives. Should we hold our breath for this feature?
Advertisement Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Hi Mantice, Take a look here R10 with auto-aperture backward compatibility. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
georg Posted May 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2009 Like you already said, we had this discussion before and the answer is: we don't really know. They told me they would use a new mount and I think it will share the elektrical contacts of the S2, the same mechatronics (aperture, AF) as with the S-System. But the S-lenses don't have a manual aperture ring... The R10 (if it's called R) will work with most R-lenses, that's 100% sure! But with a adapter which could utilize a mechatronic component to control the manual aperture of the R-lenses? Sounds more likely to me than no aperture control by the body with R-lenses at all or manual aperture control from the R-system just because of backwars-compatibility!? We will propably know more in January.
jaapv Posted May 5, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 5, 2009 The S-mount is quite a bit larger than the R mount. It seems to me that there would be ample space in an adapter to make an electric-mechanical interface to drive the R aperture system. Dedicated R10 (S200?) lenses would obviously use the S-mount system. But as Georg said - it is all speculation, smoke and mirrors....
tobey bilek Posted May 6, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 6, 2009 Leica ain`t talking about details. Any info you get is simply a guess. People who know are not allowed to talk. One Leica official recently has said the older lenses will mount. Period.
Mantice Posted May 6, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted May 6, 2009 I guess it all pure guessing, but I hope they come across this and release some detail. They will mount, I'm 100% sure; in fact even if its S-mount it will mount R-mount, judging from the size and lens-sensor distance; all it need is an adapter that someone will make it. Manual aperture control is nice to have but not required as long as it has auto-aperture and uses ROM contact. I should say do they support R-lens auto-aperture or not - because if it's yes then it has to use R-cam or ROM, one way or another. But again its all guessing like you said. However this single piece of information is all it needs for most existing manual R-users to know if R10 is something or nothing - for their manual R-lens of course.
