What are sizes of the D-Lux 4 sensor and pixel sizes ?

 

Specifically compared with those of contemporary rival "Digital Compact, namely

Size of the image sensor used in the "X" camera is 20.7mm x 13.8mm.

(Stated to be approximately seven to twelve times larger than the 1/1.8inch to 1/2.5inch image sensors used in ordinary compact digital cameras.)

The pixel size of the "X" camera's image sensor is 7.8µm.

I don't know the exact pixel size, but below are the specifications for the sensor from the manual. Perhaps you can calculate the pixel size from this?

I'm a bit surprised that the D-Lux 4 manual being as thorough as it is it didn't include the exact dimensions of its sensor.

 

If you go here ( Image sensor format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) and look at the sensor size closest to the D-Lux 4, it's 1/1.7", which is 7.6mm x 5.7mm, so the D-Lux 4's sensor is a tad bit larger than that since its sensor is 1/1.63".

I made some calculations, but my original post assumed that diagonal size (1/1.63") was a standard dimension. Thanks to gtravis I noticed that the inch system was not a standard dimension. After reading the Wiki entry linked above I understood that these numbers are actually referring to a packaging standard and doesn't reflect the image surface dimensions. I updated the following entry using the nearest Wiki numbers for the diagonal size.

 

When the sensor diagonal size for LX3/D-Lux4 is taken as 10.07mm, pixel width is calculated as 2.04µm. I made the calculations myself, please follow for details.

Total pixel size of LX3/D-Lux4 sensor: 4116x2744 pixels (ratio: 3x/2x)

 

Diagonal size of LX3/D-Lux4 sensor: 1/1.63 inch => 10.07 mm

 

x = 2.792915487994028629362350627956 mm

 

Longer edge 3x = 8.38 mm = 4116 pixels

Shorter edge 2x = 5.59 mm = 2744 pixels

 

1 pixel = 0.0020356526880422949193603138687726 mm ~ 2.04µm

 

For a more precise number the actual diagonal size is needed. Hope this helps.

Actually, the table in the Wikipedia entry gives a size for a 1/1.6" sensor, which is closer to 1.63" than 1/1.7". That size is given as 8.08x6.01mm.

The dimensions of the sensor are usually left unspecified, except for DSLRs or rangefinder cameras. The D-Lux 4 (LX3) is an especially complicated case as the camera has an oversized sensor and only ever uses some cropped part of its light-sensitive area. The dimensions of the crop vary with the aspect ratio with only the diagonal being constant – about 9.2 mm. The largest crop size used is the one for the 4:3 aspect ratio – about 7.4 mm x 5.5 mm. For 3:2 it is 7.7 mm x 5.1 mm, for 16:9 about 8.0 mm x 4.5 mm.
