dommlid Posted April 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thinking about buying an M8 and not having funds for a 'good' Leica lens as well could I canvass members about alternative lens choices? Preference is for wide angle (21mm ish), and standard (35-50mm). Should I bite the bullet and invest in a good used 28mm asph or buy a couple of Voigtlanders? Opinion seems to be divided about the Voightlanders, can I buy with confidence? One last question, anyone have experience with buying from Robert White? Good, bad? Thanks guys and gals. Advertisement Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Hi dommlid, Take a look here Non Leica lenses for M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mystic Posted April 30, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 30, 2009 Hey, you can also take a look at the Carl Zeiss lenses for Leica M, I really like them. They got a good build quality and the glass is nice too but they are a little bit more expensive than the voigtländer lenses.
earleygallery Posted April 30, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 30, 2009 Hi, I don't have an M8, and I've not bought from Robert White, but I've only heard good things about them, also they are (one of ?) the only Voigtlander dealers in the UK. Lenses - you have so much choice. Voigtlander, Zeiss, Leica, Minolta (CL lenses), Russian........ I can definately recommend the VC 35mm Skopar, and I also use a 25mm Skopar - both are excellent and amazing value. Note the coding issues with wide angle lenses on the M8 however (buy screw fit VC lenses and codeable M mount adaptors). I believe its a problem with lenses wider than 35mm. Leica have their less expensive lenses, the Summarit range and also the now discontinued 50mm Elmar 2.8 (last version) which are well reviewed. Talking of reviews consider a subscription to Sean Reids website. You will no doubt want Leica lenses ultimately but there are plenty of options to consider. stephengilbert Posted April 30, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 30, 2009 Sean Reid (Welcome to ReidReviews) has reviewed most or all of the lenses you might choose. His subscription website is easily worth the cost if you want to decide which lens(es) to buy. I have both a Zeiss 21mm Biogon C (coded via Milich), and the Voigtlander 12mm Heliar (uncoded). Though neither is fast, they are both very nice lenses, and small as well.
