jlm Posted November 3, 2006 Share #41 Posted November 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just checked this at Photoplus: with a Lecia 21 mounted, the 28 framelines come up and the lever is all the way toward the lens. you can pull the lever to the left and see the 24 line come into view. So if the lever postion is being sensed to determine FL, something is wacky.

blovitch Posted November 3, 2006 Share #42 Posted November 3, 2006 I unpacked my black M8 this morning and have had a bit of a play today... Thus far I am quite impressed however... I have a couple of dead / stuck pixels on the lcd display, not major just annoying and the frame selections using the Tri Elmar is a little iffy, and the correct frame does not always drop in first time, whereas it works fine on my M7. I have also noticed that the camera body is quite sticky, I dont seem to be able to put it down ) -Tim

So if the lever postion is being sensed to determine FL, something is wacky. This is only used if the 6 bit lens code says "28-35-50 Tri-Elmar". If there's no code or not a Tri-Elmar, the lever position does not change the lens type/focal length sensed, if any.
farnz Posted November 4, 2006 Share #44 Posted November 4, 2006 OK, I've solved the problem by running a soft pencil lead along the sides of the finder and flash shoes and working them on and off the camera a few times to micro-lubricate the surfaces. Still tight, but OK. Mark, This is an ingenious solution and I hate to dampen the mood but perhaps there is a small, hidden risk that M8 owners should note. I'm fairly sure that the graphite used in pencil leads conducts electricity, which could cause problems if enough pencil lead was applied that caused the residue to come into contact with the electrical contacts in the hot shoe. This should not be a problem as long as a little restraint is used and the contacts are wiped clean before the camera is turned on. Thanks for your feedback on the M8 - it's a bit like watching a group of friends opening their birthday presents . Can't wait 'till mine arrives! Pete. marknorton Posted November 4, 2006 Author Share #45 Posted November 4, 2006 I should stress I only wiped the edges of the foot which slide against the inside vertical edges of the hot shoe with a pencil lead. This is not going to cause any electrical problems and when I told Leica, they told me "we do too". I'm going to see how the second camera is and send the first back with some new lenses for coding in due course.
sean_reid Posted November 5, 2006 Share #46 Posted November 5, 2006 Hi Sean in your review you mention the current auxiliary finder as an alternative to the new one that goes with the Tri Elmar Mark seems to be having trouble fitting his in the hotshoe, Did you actually try one on your M8? thanks Yes, I have one here and it goes on and off without a problem. Cheers, Sean
