carcam Posted April 25, 2009 Share #1  Posted April 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) -- I'm not Leica bashing. In fact, I love the cameras and lenses. But this is my 2nd 75 2.0 summicron lens I've had to send back. The first one had a rough, grinding focus ring; this one has the aperture dial 180 degrees off- on the bottom of the lens rather than the top where you can see it. Both brand new, never used. This one from B&H and the boxes were never opened. And you can't blame this on the UPS guy. How in the world can you spend so much on a fine lens and nobody looks at it, tries it out and they send it completely wrong...? I can understand the problems with a delicate electronic camera that can get disturbed in shipping but this is a mechanical problem that was assembled completely backwards and they have no quality control checks to catch it. Makes me a little worried. I doubt even GM or Chrysler would assemble something like this... I'm not really complaining although I have to pay shipping back to B&H- it's not their fault. I just want a a 75 that works the way it's supposed to- (xpost dpreview)  And my 100th post Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Hi carcam, Take a look here Another Leica QC problem. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Nicoleica Posted April 25, 2009 Share #2 Â Posted April 25, 2009 I must admit, that's a pretty glaring error to make. It's not just the ring either, the index mark is bass-akwards too. I'm really surprised that it made it through QC, and I hope that you get it replaced promptly. Of course, you could always keep it as a collectors special. Special model for over-the-head photography? Australian market limited edition? etc..etc... (Please don't hate me for my weird sense of humour.) Guest John66 Posted April 25, 2009 Share #5 Â Posted April 25, 2009 -- I'm not Leica bashing. In fact, I love the cameras and lenses. But... Â It's a shame anybody has to start a sentence like that when describing such a lack of quality control. I'd be absolutely furious after paying so much money. Â This kind of thing simply should not be happening. A leica lens must be one of the simplest of all lenses in terms of actual control - no electronics, just focus and aperture, and they screw up the aperture ring. Incredible. Â I'd demand Leica arrange and pay for the additional shipping.
wolfloid Posted April 25, 2009 Share #6 Â Posted April 25, 2009 I think Leica should apologise for this and refund any out of pocket expenses you have, like postage. Seems a real travesty of their much touted 'quality control'.
marknorton Posted April 26, 2009 Share #7 Â Posted April 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Truly unbeliveable. I'm more than ready to give Leica credit where credit is due but how in the world did they come to ship this lens? Â You should send the pictures to Leica Customer Support (email on the web-site) and ask them for an explanation; I assume you are in the US, so an email to Leica NJ asking them to pay for the shipping cost would be good too. egibaud Posted April 26, 2009 Share #9 Â Posted April 26, 2009 I had a 75 lux cleaned and coded last year and they did exactly the same error and had to send it back. Unbeileivable but true !!!!
mmk60 Posted April 26, 2009 Share #10 Â Posted April 26, 2009 sigh... Â carcam - sorry to hear that you are having such problem. I bought a 75mm Summarit brand new last year and when I was using it a few months ago, the aperture ring came loose. Â sigh... Â Keep your chin up and look at the bright side! grduprey Posted April 26, 2009 Share #11 Â Posted April 26, 2009 This reminds me of an incident at the company I worked for many years ago. they make very high end electronics. We received a crystal filter back from a customer who complained that the filter had quit working after about 6 months. We opened the case up and found that it was completely empty! This was a hermetically sealed unit. Talk about a surprise. We checked the paperwork on the unit and found it had gone through all checks, inspections and tests with correct functionality and proper inspections. And the customer said it did work when first installed. Just goes to show strange things do happen, even with very extensive inspections and tests. RockyIII Posted April 26, 2009 Share #12 Â Posted April 26, 2009 Durn. Hard to believe, but I guess it happens. I got a Nikon lens once that had a petal hood that was oriented incorrectly. B&H is good about returns though. Â Rocky
