elansprint72 Posted April 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 24, 2009 P51D. Merlin Type 66 or 70, not sure if it is a Packard, or Rolls though. I'm only guessing about the engine, btw. Let's see some more, and the B17, please. :D
USA road racer Posted April 24, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted April 24, 2009 Yes, it is a P-51 exhaust! It is a 2 seater built that way by North American. The B-17 flew 140 missions with numerous crews. ! They will be at the Scottsdale airport all weekend. The B-24 that was there with the 17 flew 130 missions! From the Collier collection. elansprint72 Posted April 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 24, 2009 Tell them to adjust the mixture; that engine is running a little lean. My favourite single-seater (even with two seats fitted). A two seat Spitfire went thro' the UK auctions this week, about 1.5 million GBP, from memory. I guess not many bombers managed a quarter of that number of trips. USA road racer Posted April 24, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted April 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think the flash may have been a little overexposing inside those exhaust pipes as they were not quite that light in color.
Guest flatfour Posted April 24, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 24, 2009 Here's the Spit Pete. It went for £1.7million

elansprint72 Posted April 24, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 24, 2009 So I was completely wrong about the Mustang- not a "D" at all, but a highback. The "sting in the tail" shot is most unusual- well seen (I would rotate it a bit though). Any more? Thanks for the Spitfire shot Tony, I'd only seen a ground shot of it before.
