aauckland Posted April 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Leica CL was released in 1973, so on the basis of time alone, it could, maybe, perhaps, be called a "Classic Camera". This much berated model, is a fabulous camera to use. Yes know it has a short rangefinder base, and it has had some technical issue's during it's life, (take-up spool cracking, and metering questions.) But this fully mechanical body, is well designed, (by Leica), and beautifully built, (by Minolta.) Since this is a total Leica design, I assume the reason to out-source manufacturing, was the need for lower construction costs, meaning a more modern cost efficient manufacturing plant. (Minolta.) Obviously made the more necessary by the, (more), affordable price of the CL. I love my CL, ...here it is with a 1955 collapsible Cron 50/2. (Which by the way collapses just fine, being well clear of the metering arm.):
Advertisement Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Hi aauckland, Take a look here "Classic Camera"?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
offshore Posted April 23, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 23, 2009 Like many of the Leica models that were "different" the CL, like the M5, was criticized then for what is now considered forward looking progress for Leica at that time. One day the M8 may receive its due as it is much maligned today for its many quirks and unfairly compared to other digital cameras on the market primarily DSLR's because it has no other rangefinder competition other than the Epson. The CL may be considered a classic by some and probably should be as the one's that got on the market were the survivors of some very strenuous Leica quality control. It is a fine camera in feel and use and it sounds like you are enjoying yours.

wizard Posted May 5, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2009 Judging from the color of the reflexes on the front element, I'd say this is a pre-asph 90 Summicron. Still, the current 90 asph should fit a Leica CL, too, I see no reason why it shouldn't. Andy
