Having the urge for film again and with many D&P places closing up shop how are you people going about processing B/W film these day? I did use Darkroom Ltd for contacts, then scan in the best ones (very few). They are not cheap and if I'm going to click away I was wondering if there is another alternative people are happy with other than getting wet myself. I live around the milton keynes area if any drop off and collection outlets are available (other than Jessops) - suggestions welcome. Many Thanks

Jim searching my database I came up with these BUT not sure if they are still in business or the quality of their work.

Ouse Valley Processing in Bedford

Don't have web addresses for these:

Max Spielmann

16 Crown Walk, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK9 3AH

tel: 08707 505626

Simon Photographic Mk Ltd

33 High Street Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK11 1AA

tel: 01908 568900

Nakashee Digital Images Limited

35 Barton Road Bletchley, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK2 3NJ

tel : 01908 371516

Good luck. More fun to do it yourself if it's B&W.

Processing your own is the only way to go, IMHO. You can expose and process appropriately, for what you want to achieve, and it will cost you buttons. It takes about half an hour of your time, and will cost you about a quid per roll, if that, after the capital outlay of the kit (from Jessops, or similar, which will set you back about £50 tops)

Why anyone would want to send their B&W film away to be processed is beyond my comprehension.

..... and you are in control of the whole process. Always found it strange to go to the trouble of carefully exposing a film yourself and then hand over another critical part of the process to somebody else to introduce so many unknown variables into the finished result that you have no control over!

Whilst all the arguments for home working are valid and I agree with them if you want to use a lab then IMHO there is none better than Ilford themselves. they have set up a dedicated B/W line and are fanatical about quality. I have used them and the results of their work were excellent just a shame about the content ( note to self : must try harder or even try ) .

  • 2 weeks later...

For a superb outfit for all film develop/processing, i cnba higly recommend Colourbox techunique of Cave street oxford; he has been in the oxford area for the last 30 years, and he is GOOD. due to the current climate, he processes negs and reversal films on wednesdays of eachh week. he will post films back as he finishes them. They are spotless, and properly packed; I never go any where else.
