Is the Panasonic LX-3 due being replaced?

Hello,

I have noticed people reporting that the Pana LX-3 seems to be in very short supply world over. I wonder if this is due to strong demand, or is the camera being replaced by a new model? Panasonic normally announce a new LX model in June/July, so this shortage could be due to ramping down production to make way for a new model.

Has anyone heard anything about a new LX model?

Regards

Perhaps it is just in short supply because it has been so successful? It seems impossible to locate the LX3 where I am in in Australia, although today I collected the D-lux 4 and handgrip in Sydney. There seem to be more Leicas available than Panas but possibly due to the rather greater price.

No problem, as I was wanting the D-lux anyhow. I hadn't decided about the Titanium vs. the Black model until viewing them together and trying the black accessories on each. Although some people have enjoyed the Titanium with the colour contrast, I found myself more comfortable going with the black body (I was surprised by my decision as photos I've seen on the various fora appealed).

One thing also in short supply are the viewfinders. Although fiendishly expensive, the D-lux 4 Viewfinder is literally like finding the proverbial hen's teeth (they don't exist). One is now coming from Hong Kong as it was my closest source, and best price.

I haven't heard anything, but I was glad that when I sold mine I didn't take much of a loss at all due to its high demand. I guess this just proves that Pana/Leica have a superior product in their hands.

Perhaps it is just a case of strong demand. But the thought about a replacement did cross my mind because of the timing of the shortage. On the other hand, Panasonic have so far replaced the LX series only once in two years and since the LX-3 was introduced last year, if Panasonic stays true to form then we should see a replacement next year. But one never knows :)

Hi Sparkie,

Foto Riesel in Kent St, Sydney. Sticker (shock) price says AUD1483.99. I would encourage you to look at what alternate online quotes indicate from similar dealers and politely request a 'meeting point' (indicative online best pricing suggests circa AUD1299 however not everyone has stock to hand). The guys at FR are quite friendly and very service oriented but may need a nudge on their pricing if you want to persevere.

I don't know how many Black D-Lux 4s are in Australia (through Adeal the importer), but FR advised me there were 'plenty' of Titanium. Which is no wonder considering the silly money being asked for that model (it is just grey-coloured paint after all? Nice to behold but still the same camera).

Good luck ....

Thanks for the info Loksi. I ended ordering mine from the UK rather than here in Oz - too expensive! But I'll keep Riesel in mind. I was VERY tempted to get the Titanium version, but my gf put some perspective to the fact its not made of Ti, (yes) just a layer of paint.

Plus you won't get the red dot, but rather a titanium-painted one, if that's important to you. I like my Titanium (it's in the repair shop right now). It looks awesome. As much as I like black cameras, the moment you take this camera out of your bag, everyone, and I mean everyone, will ask about it and think it's worth a lot more.

yeh, i'll put black tape over that nasty red dot like i did with my black M8. or I'll pry the red dot out like an oyster and replace it with a black paint dot i have lying around somewhere from my M6TTL LHSA spare parts. Hehe :D:D I reeally like the titanium version, esp the matching dot. enjoy :)

The melbourne guys are ltting hte DLux4 out the door for thirteen seventy five. The titanium is only seventeen fifty but you get a toy case.

I was happy to be able to bargain the black DL4 down to AUD1300, but nonetheless balked at the AUD1695 that FR had on the the titanium or the AUD1750 or whatever, that Camera Lane wants in Melbourne. I seriously considered it as I liked the (nearly) invisible Leica nameplate and the general colour scheme. However the final clincher was that for 'me' the look when combined with the black handgrip and black viewfinder equalled too much black/grey/black busy look going on :-)

For those antipodeans interested, do a Shopbot net search. The Titanium is available for less: a Camerahouse outlet in Perth has it for AUD1478.40 plus small shipping fee to other areas. Also check Vanbar ..... they are doing the Titanium for around AUD1599.

In the end, the camera is just a tool ...... a very well designed one, and a very useful and attractive one at that :-)

Kalina, I hope you get your DL4 back soon. I have really enjoyed your pics (visited your site and *love* them!).
