Brent1965 Posted April 20, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I'm so excited! I've recently been lucky enough to find my first Leica, an "almost mint" iiig #980983. It arrived 3 weeks ago. From the moment I opened the mail box & smelt the also "almost mint" case leather, opened it & took the thing in my hands it just makes sense - I struggle to articulate it. Being a long-term user of my beloved F2 Nikon this is a whole different ball-game. It's small & friendly to hold, fits in pockets, doesn't cut off blood flow to my head when on a strap around my neck, everything is quiet & fuss-free, when I take photo's- people react very differently to it than my hulking & noisy old Pro Nikon, it's a wonderful conversation starter and people who have no interest in phototography strike up conversations about it. "That's a lovely old camera" is the theme...or my fave so far "can't you afford a decent digital camera"? I've just sent it for a full CLA and "whatever it needs" to prepare it for a lifetime of constant companionship and use. I've two further weeks to wait... A strap from Luigi is on the way, a Voiglander VC2 is sitting here awaiting it's return. This really is like being 7 years old waiting for Santa. dcoombs Posted April 20, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 20, 2009 The IIIG is a sweet camera. Great viewfinder (from the M3, I believe) and great feel to it. I bought mine off my brother in 1965 and while I haven't used in a while it's still a special camera to me. Which lens did you get with it? Use it in good health! And we look forward to seeing some pix from it posted on the forum. Doug
Brent1965 Posted April 21, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted April 21, 2009 A 2.8 elmar #1636589, physically it's excellent, but abit cloudy inside. I suspect also the distance scale is slightly out. I'm really looking forward to having this minor aspect sorted, with it's tune-up as the zone focusing idea is something that I've been into since it's first roll. As soon as it's back, and I've really got the loading aspect sorted (more nerves than anything I suspect) I'll post images. Both camera & mine. roydonian Posted April 21, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 21, 2009 Hi all, it's a wonderful conversation starter and people who have no interest in phototography strike up conversations about it. "That's a lovely old camera" is the theme...or my fave so far "can't you afford a decent digital camera"? The IIIg is still my favourite Leica film camera. But as regards conversations triggered by the Leica, the best I've had were both responses to my M2. Company VIP: "Don't you feel embarrassed carrying that clunky old Russian camera? Can't you afford anything better?" Elderly gentleman in the street: "How nice it is to see someone still using one of these old Contaxes" Best regards, Doug
