wgcho Posted April 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently came across a classifieds listing which says: "Some of the III models produced in 1934 with 13XXXX serial #s have bright chrome bodies, which are shinier than regular chrome bodies. They are sought after among collectors." The picture really looked quite beautiful. If this is true, are they IIIa models? Can anyone point me to where I can find more information? Thanks, -Ted
Advertisement Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Hi wgcho, Take a look here "Bright Chrome" Barnack Bodies. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted April 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 19, 2009 Photo or link? I don't think so, careful its not a Russian fake - they usually have shiny silver/chrome or gold finishes. Some war/post war period models had a lower quality finish which is evident by peeling/corrosion now. Maybe one of our experts will clarify.
wgcho Posted April 19, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted April 19, 2009 The camera has already been sold, so I don't think it's fair for the seller to post a link here. A quick google with 'leica bright chrome' does bring up an item from Classic Connection with similar description, but no pictures. https://classicconnection.com/product_detail.php?pid=1334

Guest Ron (Netherlands) Posted April 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 19, 2009 Here on this picture of my LTM Leica's you can see the difference in chromium: far left the Leica III from 1934 (first batch), with shiny chromium, second, in between, the IIIc which chromium is less shiny, and next at the right the two IIIf models with matt chromium. The same difference in finishes can be seen on the elmars in this picture.
earleygallery Posted April 19, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 19, 2009 This is the sort of finish you see on typical Russian fakes (gold or chrome) http://www.rugift.com/images/leica-camera-black-gold-wood-07.jpg
thrid Posted April 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) What is claimed to be Henri Cartier-Bresson's first Leica is on display at his institute. It appears to be a bright chrome body. http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00G/00GJ0N-29797684.jpg http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00G/00GJaS-29815184.jpg http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00G/00GJaZ-29815284.jpg
