soulman Posted April 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been lurking around here for a while due to becoming a bit jaded with my photography and looking for something different, the people and pictures have inspired me to start looking at my photography another perspective. Leica has always been an aspirational brand for me and I've been thinking about a switch to the M8. Anyway to cut a long story short I collected a D-Lux 4 (Px'ed a G10, to big and bulky for a carry all the time camera) from my local dealer on Saturday and took it out yesterday on a family trip to an old steelworks (now quite a big tourist attraction with different "zones") to see how it would perform. As an aside what should I consider most whilst thinking about a switch to the M8 (from D300 with a few lenses and flash), I will need to get a DSLR for my work photography but will probably pick up a Pentax K20d). Finances don't allow me to keep the nikon kit and get an M8 so it's an either or. I'm drawn to the M8 because recently I'm enjoying capturing people and places more than anything else and like the idea of a more discrete and portable system, sorry for the long post any help or advice would be much appreciated.... Im in exactly the same situation. I bought a dlux4 in the hope that it would stem my m8 thoughts but all it's done is impress upon me how much more I'd use something that size than my nikon d3/d300 :/ I really like shallow DoF so in the end I know that if I want that in a small package, the M8 is pretty much the only game in town. There is a way to afford both an M8 and a DSLR because Nikon just changed their list price on the D200 so if you google around you can find new D200s for $599 plus tax/shipping. You can then buy a kit lens for under $200 like the 18-55mm VR and you'll be pretty happy with this for a while. I just bought a D200 as a backup to my D300. Yes, I'm sorry to have to tell you that it is an incurable condition. One you have developed Leicosis it's only a matter of time before the more severe symptoms set in. You will find that once you have an M8, you will start collecting lenses at a surprising speed. Your family members may be worried when you are heard muttering 'I must get a Summilux', but this only the beginning. Late stage sufferers are sometimes found sitting in dark corners chanting 'Noctilux.....Noctilux.....'. An understanding spouse is a great help. Especially one who will ease your suffering with an accessory or lens when the cravings become too bad. This forum is support group for others who have this affliction, and you will find many friends here. Fortunately, medical science has been unable to make any progress on a cure to date. From what I've read it's low light performance is average at best and I don't think I could live with an EVF....
