cpclee Posted April 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) - What is a good price for a mint condition copy of this lens? - List is $1799, yet I see a previous, non-ASPH version costing more than that on eBay. What gives? - How is the lens regarded in terms of performance? Thanks.

Not sure but if you are seeing ealier versions of the 28mm f/2.8 going for more then the current ASPH version it is a fluke and someone paid more then it is worth. What is the ASPH version worth mint, used? Whatever someone is will to pay for it. When they first came out and were hard to get they went for more used then new, because you couldn't get one new. Now I would think they would go for $1200-$1500.

I've seen the ASPH on eBay for $1499 and haven't seen them any lower, but it's desperate times for some and one may crop up for less. Can't figure the price differential for the pre ASPH except some sellers try to put a premium on the older lenses or lenses they think are "rare and unique." I bought the ASPH version with my M8 almost three years ago and it is a bargain for what it can do. My only complaint about it is the aperture ring seems a little loose compared to my other Leitz lenses but I've heard everyone complain about that so it must be in the design. The lens is incredibly sharp and half the price of the Summicron so if you don't need the extra stop and can live with a little fall off in sharpness on the edges, compared to the cron, that only Superman can see then its compact size and performance are well worth the investment. farnz Posted April 13, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 13, 2009 The version 1 28/2.8 Elmarit-M pre-asph (s/n 2,061501 - 2,533,850) has apparently become collectible and can go for considerably more than the current asph so the one on eBay may be a version 1. I think its focus ring should have a tab and be in the number range above for it to be a version 1 but others on the collectors & historica forum will be able to confirm how to identify one. Pete.
