cstevens Posted April 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well as a pro photographer who carrys big DSLR and big lenses around, I have strived for the last year or so to find a quality P&S camera with full manual that I can take anywhere. I started with the Canon G9, sold it...wasnt quite small enough and not the image quality I was expecting. I then happened upon some threads on the LX-3 and the D-LUX 4. I went to a local jacobs, and handled both, and couldnt justify the £200 difference in cost...so I plumped for the LX-3. Well I was pretty blown away by the little beast, very happy with it, especially low light, and for street photography, but something was just niggling...to much shiny bits, and a regret that I could finally have afford a Leica, but chicked out. Well today just gone out and got the Leica as well...the urge of the clean lines, the red dot and frankly not much else got the better of me So today I am now the proud owner of a Leica Were next? Sell my D700's and get an M8...maybe
Advertisement Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Hi cstevens, Take a look here New Owner D-Lux4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
formernikon Posted April 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 11, 2009 Congrats on your new purchase. I've spent the past 20 years with Nikon SLRs and DSLRs. I just bought the D-Lux 4 also. I've missed A LOT of photographic moments because I was too lazy to carry my camera/equipment with me. Hopefully this little thing is going to be a convenient answer to my laziness. cstevens Posted April 11, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted April 11, 2009 Hey. Yes, thats certainly what my intention is. I got into photography years ago whilst still in London doing a lot of street photography. I think these days you need to be a lot more descreet...the DLux4 has to be the most descreet yet good quality camera out there. I am quite amazed at the low light capability of the camera...mainly thanks the fast lens I think....I still cant believe I just dropped an additional £200 just for styling and slight better jpegs (apparently), but I now smile when I look at the LX-3 and Dlux4 side by side...LX will be on ebay shortly London trip next week, so really looking forward to that. I am going to set myself a goal to use the camera at least every other day....get my love of photography back (rather than photography to make money). cstevens Posted April 11, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted April 11, 2009 Has anyone used the Leica D-Lux 4 Camera Hand Grip 18697 I saw one in the shop, made entirely of metal, made the camera feel great, but a pain as it wont fit in the case, and it was £60. https://www.harrisoncameras.co.uk/productdetail.kmod?Productid=7989
Cherub Posted April 11, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 11, 2009 I use the leica handgrip and love it ... it is not fully metal however ... a small part of plastic ... but very nice made. Cool accessory for that wonder samll camera. ps : you know; I am considering now also to buy an M8 ... I use DSLR Canon for sport shooting, but I fell in love of the red dot since I get the D-LUX4 ... and would love to upgrade for my daily photographic shooting ... Bertje Posted May 18, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 18, 2009 My story is the same one. After a lot of huge camera's I order for a Leica D-lux4 and can't wait. ( trace and tracking with UPS from Sheffield to Groningen NL) First I had the pana LX3 in mind but after comparing both manuals there are some differences. The LX3 has now auto brecketing necessary to make HDR's. And also no auto multi aspect, but who need that. Anyway, both options are not mentioned in the dutch online manuals. cobbslane Posted May 18, 2009 Share #7 Posted May 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Before you take the plunge with the handgrip (which I am told prevents you using the (hopefully) free leather case that came with your DL4 in the UK) take a look at the Richard Franiec model which many of us have. Absolutely superbly made and styled - and cheap at ~$34 shipped to UK. see Richard Franiec's Camera Accessories BTW I was in same position as you having been a full time pro for last 5 years - sold up all Canon kit - wife grabbed proceeds - except for £500 which I invested (blew! - wife) on the DL4. I look at it as the last camera I will ever own or need for the rest of my days! But then I said that about the 30D, 5D, M6, M7, R9 also....mmmmm. Maybe not. (I can relax in saying that as whilst that was the excuse for the missus she doesn't read this forum).
Bertje Posted May 21, 2009 Share #8 Posted May 21, 2009 For 2 days now I'm the owner of a D4. Comparing with my last camera Nikon D80 there are some improvements. Its a different way of photography. So, comparing is not really useful to me. An other thing is, I have already a fingerprint on my lens. To avoid that in the future I'm thinking to buy the lensmate. But I still don't understand (technically spoken) how it fits on the lens. Or maybe there's a other way to protect the lens.( there is one I think, don't take the lens cap of. )
ians Posted May 21, 2009 Share #9 Posted May 21, 2009 Bertje The ring surrounding the lens unscrews - then screw the lensmate on in its place. There are instructions on Richard Franiec's website. I too had a D80 and a bag of lenses. Now I just have the D-Lux 4. I love it - I feel as if my 'creative fire' is coming back. Ian
Bertje Posted May 21, 2009 Share #10 Posted May 21, 2009 Thanks Ian, So that's how it goes. I'll go for it. But the next problem is the camera with the lensmate on will not fit in the leader case than. I was thinking to ask a oldfasion shoemaker to enlarge the bulge (?) in the flap. On the other hand, I love the case and it could be tricky to modify. Bert
robbi@laurenson.com Posted May 21, 2009 Share #11 Posted May 21, 2009 Wow, I ditched a D80 for the D-lux 4 as well. There must be a good market for used D80s out there .
blimey Posted May 21, 2009 Share #12 Posted May 21, 2009 I abandoned my dSLR for this one. I've reviewed my pictures and majority are scenery which DLUX4 is more than capable of handling. I cannot wait to take this on trips and everywhere. It is by far low profile and non-obtrusive. There just too many GWC(guy with camera) out there. Now, I am a GWL (guy with leica)... eric_e Posted May 21, 2009 Share #13 Posted May 21, 2009 A surprising number of DSLR users seem to have switched to the D-Lux 4. I have a D70 and D200 and a few lenses and have not touched them since buying a D-Lux 4 a couple of months ago. The only problem I have is getting used to using the LCD instead of a viewfinder especially in bright sunlight. May have to get a viewfinder. Just ordered a hand-grip from Richard Franiec which I hope will be useful. I too am happy to be a GWL.
Bertje Posted May 22, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 22, 2009 After practising on the cat ( like almost everybody does) I went out shooting in the open air and found out that people don't react so strongly as when you're at the scene white a huge DSRL and a lot of equipment. The dynamic B/W is really stunning . almost like the old triX, without noise. Ps. Adobe Lightroom don't recognize the Leica raw files. Its a bit of disappointing. Regards Bert. Guest Essemmlee Posted May 22, 2009 Share #15 Posted May 22, 2009 Ps. Adobe Lightroom don't recognize the Leica raw files. Its a bit of disappointing. My version of Lightroom recognises the files no problem - version 2.3 with Adobe Camera Raw 5.3. I think it is the ACR update you may need to read the files.
