So I'm in the market to upgrade from my C-Lux2 and am considering purchasing either the D-Lux 3 (Used) or the D-Lux 3 (New).

I've done some research on Dpreview and can't really see any considerable differences.

Digital Cameras Side-by-Side, 2 cameras: Digital Photography Review

It seems the advantage to the D-Lux 4 is a different apperture, more LCD dots, and slightly bigger screen with slightly more internal memory.

Most of the shots I will be taking will be in low light bars and restaurants.

The D-Lux 3 averages about $550 on Ebay or as a Certified Used at a Leica Dealer and the D-Lux 4 is $699 new.

Which would you reccomend?

The D-Lux 3 has an optical zoom range of 28 to 112mm (equivalent) whereas the D-Lux 4 has a range of 24 to 60mm.

If 60mm is long enough for you, go for the D-Lux 4 as its f2 lens and better high ISO performance will suit your needs better.

If you have to have a longer zoom go for the D-Lux 3

You know a camera choice is not very easy to comment.

I think Dorman give you a good aspect of the "3" vs the "4" ...

The D-LUX 4 for me was just a "love affair" when I saw it ... It is my first Leica also, but not my last. (However I practice photography since 1984 !).

I own a D-LUX 4 since one month and I am perfectly happy with it, and about its performance also. Love the pictures it do (I only shoot in jpeg). It is so light and small you can go everywhere with it, and so shoot "real life" ! ...

Don't forget the "4" has a hot shoe also, that you can use an external flash sometimes, even if you told you love to shoot "real low light" almost all the time. I use the Leica CF22 and feel really happy with it also.

Personnaly I will pick the "4" of course ... But it is a "love affair" ! LOL

ps : I shoot almost all the time with the Leica Viewfinder accessory, so this is impossible with the "3" ... because of the lack of the hot shoe ...

Well, my tuppence worth..........in your position I'd probably go with the D-Lux 4 for the higher ISO performance which will help in the lower light situations you mention. The smaller zoom is disappointing though.... But then again most users says it's a great camera, but so is the 3.

Already having a D-Lux 3 my situation is different - basically I don't think the alleged improvements are worth the cost of trading up, particularly in these straightened economic times........

Price is obviously a concern as well, so why not consider the LX3?

Re the comparison of the 3 to the 4, I had the D-Lux 2 and when the 3 came out, I elected to pass on it as I felt it didn't have enough to warrant the change. The LX3/D-Lux 4 however, is a different beast, superior in a lot of ways. The choice between the LX3 and the D-Lux 4, to me, is predominantly more a matter of style than substance. I've had the LX3 for a few months and its fabulous. I just ordered the D-Lux 4 because I want to have the Leica style and the hand grip.

Just another perspective for you.

Interesting...both DP Review and Adorama are showing the D-LUX-3 price as $1,999.99. Has this thing suddenly become a sought after collector's piece?

Brent, I had wondered the same thing. They are possibly referring to the Digilux 3?

I have both the D-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4. One difference which has been largely overlooked is how the file sizes change when switching aspect ratios. The DL3 merely cropped off the ends of the frame when switching from 16:9 to 3:2 or 4:3. The DL4 on the other hand actually results in larger file sizes (and pixel count) in 3:2 and 4:3.

Personally, I like the fact that the DL4 has two strap lugs, it can be carried around my neck (I may look like a tourist, but do I care?).

Wider lens, significantly better high iso performance & faster lens (!) would make this an easy decision for me. I had the D-Lux 3 and it never convinced me as far as IQ is concerned. I now have the Pana LX3, which I consider a substantial improvement over the previous generation Pana LX2/ Leica D-Lux 3 model.

I just received my D-Lux 4 to replace my LX3 and I have to say that the additional grip (one of the main reasons I switched) is worth the change alone. I have quite big hands and the hand grip makes a huge difference to the handling. Even though the LX3 has a built-in grip, this is far superior.

The handgrip for me is a necessary addition. Annoying that it makes the camera not fit the leather case, but c'est la vie. It's nice to have options, anyway. With the grip for more "serious" photography and without for throwing in my pocket for the evening...
