I do not know if it has been mentioned already, but the latest LFI has quite a nice article on the S2 (Which seems to have started life as S1 btw!) plus a very firm commitment to the planned introduction date.

It is an article about the designing of the camera with design scetches incorporated. It explains the concept, some of the features and repeatedly mentions that it is on schedule.

Jaap,

Yes, the article mentions S2 all the time: as the title says: 'Frrom Start to Finish'.

But still - there is indeed a sneak preview on page 24 that Holger managed to pass in: two photo's showing an S1 body, which if you look at it carefully, shows a body that is a lot more Streamlined than the bulky Big professional S2, presented as mock-up, shown in drawings - and in all animations - all the time.

For some reason the S1 pictures seam realistic to me, and the way they are placed (the way the logo's fit in the frame) it cannot just be accidental. So as a Solms watcher, I do think I see something that is attractive to me, a SlimOn, with Stealthfactor1, comparatively as discreet as . .

OK, I'll be seen day-dreaming. :o You might be right, this S1 was maybe just a first studymodel. But it would fit my market niche.

I would hope so too. In that case the R successor project would be further along than we dare hope :).After all, Leica has been known to count backwards before with the M2 and M1. But I fear it may well be that the name S1 was used in the first stages of the development of AFRIKA, and suddenly somebody realized that that name was taken, so it was changed to S2. That was my first thought when I spotted the images. On the other hand, we have double names in the Leica lineup already : MP and Summarit...

It would have a number of advantages to give the R successor an S mount.

It would enable an extremely bright real 100% viewfinder

It would an S2-S1 adapter straightforward

It would make an R-S1 adapter possible with a mechanical-electronic interface

It would give the lens designers space for very fast lenses.

It would save costs through standarisation of the production.

From the article we learn that AFRIKA was meant to be the "R10" and not a "new" camera system.

Pretty pointless to publish several pages on the design of a non existing camera - all the prototypes look different of unfinished... I prefer to see a product otherwise LFI will start writing about the battery concept and peripherals before we even get so see a final version of the S2.

On the contrary, I think it's very interesting to see the evolutionary process the camera went through; there will be plenty written about it when it arrives, including comparative pictures of walls and garden sprinklers who want us to persuade them to keep the S2 instead of the Nikon D40 with a kit lens.

...and some rural doctor on the north-eastern seaboard will be posting photos of his dog, his living room, a tree in his yard, a bush in front of his house, and things hanging in his windows, 12 at a time, and everyone here will hold their breath until the first person suggests that he might post only his best, one at a time, and ask for critique... (true, but not a Leica M8 story).

I personally really look forward to seeing and trying the camera, although I won't have the money for it or anything like it for some time. Mark will of course buy 3 and tear down one of them :)

Before starting a new thread...

There have been two more articles about the S2 in LFI and I think they are a waste of paper. The camera has AF and a leaf shutter. It took LFI about 10 pages to say that. Neither the AF nor the leaf shutter are any better than stuff we know for years if not decades. Especially for the leaf shutter you should ask yourself, what is the news why did Leica have to reinvent the obvious? 1/1000s or 1/2000s would be news, 1/500s is standard and readily available.

If you don’t know a lot about central shutters, this article would be quite informative, and if you do, it should make for an interesting read as well. The design of a central shutter presents some interesting challenges and the approach chosen by Leica is a clever alternative to existing designs. Of course, if all you care about are performance data, then the article falls short; that will have to wait for the introduction of the S2 and its lenses.

The picture on the back of the (green) issue - 05/2009 - did attract some comment at the breakfast table this morning...

Yes - I had it lying in the practice. Carefully with the green side up
