mdt2 Posted March 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am seeking guidance for posting my photos to the photo forums on this site. I know there is an FAQ for doing this but I didn't find it all that helpful. My question is simple. If I am posting a .jpg file what should the resolution and image size be set to. I realize the file size has to be 240 kb or less but which parameter should I favor? Thanks.

stunsworth Posted March 30, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2009 For landscape format shots I normally post images either 800 or 960 pixels wide and around 240k. For portrait shots I tend to restrict them to 750 pixels high - that's purely so that they can fit on the viewer's screen.
rob_x2004 Posted March 30, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2009 When you go to a new place it never hurts to right click properties. In the olden days I always used to check dimensions and file sizes of stuff that looked right and worked well on any site before uploading. I was complying on the old lieca site long before I ever found the rules. Maybe it is less important these days now most have moved on from dial up, but its still polite to stick to something reasonable.

I realize the file size has to be 240 kb or less but which parameter should I favor? Thanks. I am working on a full, updated version of the guidelines and I would welcome your input into why you found the existing thread unhelpful. I assume that you are referring to this thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/photo-forum/announcements.html and I intend to make a video showing the technique, as well as one for the correct sizing and saving of images ready to post. If you re-read the rules of the forum that you will have seen when you registered, http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/about-leica-forum/6909-rules-leica-forum.html, the max sizes both dimensionally and in kb terms for images posted are given there too. You will need to adjust the jpg quality in order to get a 960 wide image a small enough file to upload to the server. Depending on the colours in the file, this might be anything from 7 to 12 on a Photoshop quality scale.

I realize the file size has to be 240 kb or less but which parameter should I favor? Thanks. Resolution is a meaningless parameter in this context. If you make it about 900 to960 wide for landscape at between 200 and 230 Mb you are fine. It is more important to watch your sharpening. Reducing image size will make it soft, and trying to get it sharp again will produce artefacts. My technique is to give it USM: 0.4 pixels at about 25 to 50% - but on a layer. Then I drop the fill of the layer until the halos are not too bad. Mostly down to 60%.
