isn't so common these days, what with the majority of cars being FWD.

Shot with a Digilux 2 ... one of the nice parts of living in the desert is that our cars don't rust and corrode. The engine above is in my 5-year old daily-driver, which has covered just over 60,000 miles so far, and still looks nearly new...

Do you not have problems with paint erosion due to the constant sand blasting effect?

Yes and No. For the most part, No -- the sun is murder on paint, especially metallic colors (which is why all my cars have non-metallic paint) -- but sometimes, Yes. For instance, back in the mid-'90s, I was caught in a cinder storm on I-40 just west of Gallup, NM (instead of sand, they use cinders on the road during winter because there is a plentiful supply locally due to all of the pre-historic volcanic activity that occurred in the area) and my car was so thoroughly "sandblasted" after just three minutes of exposure to it that my insurance company paid for new glass, chrome trim, and a full repaint. In fact, the damage -- purely cosmetic, mind you -- was so extensive that I actually had to argue with them not to total the car.

So, Yes, this can happen.
