rosuna Posted October 28, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like to know if the M8 supports the SD-HC format or not. Can anyone confirm this?
Advertisement Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Hi rosuna, Take a look here M8 and SD-HC cards. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnastovall Posted October 28, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2006 It appears for the larger cards they only support HC. See this response from Leica U.S. on the subject of SD cards.
ho_co Posted October 29, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 29, 2006 The original design of SD had a maximum allowable size of 2 GB; SD-HC is the solution, allowing addressing of more data. So any cards larger than 2GB must be SD-HC. And yes, the M8 supports SD-HC. --HC
philipotto Posted October 29, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 29, 2006 In many places Leica states cards up 4GB, is there a reason for this? Will the newly released 8GB SD-HC, and future even larger capacities, not work with the M8?
gepetto Posted October 29, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 29, 2006 Rubén The short answer is yes the M8 supports SD-HC cards. The long answer that constitutes what the difference is between SD and SD-HC has been going round and round. Cards that are SD-HC will be clearly marked as being so. There are SD cards that use FAT32 addressing which allows them a capacity of 4GB but in no way are these cards SD-HC. If DMR owners are able to use these 4GB SD (non HC) cards the M8 most likely will also. What is really disheartening is Steve Lipsey post in the link above. The fact that the only reader known to be SD-HC that comes bundled with Sandisk's recently released 4GB SD-HC card is freezing up a Mac.
gepetto Posted October 29, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2006 Rubén Taking a second look I can see why you have asked this question. I made my short answer above on the assumption on DPReview statement that the M8 supports SDHC. It seems no where in Leica's spec/data materials do they say the M8 supports SDHC. The Digilux 3, V-LUX 1 and D-LUX 3 all state SDHC support. That said all three of these camera's also have the input of Panasonic.

rosuna Posted October 29, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted October 29, 2006 Leica should make this clear in an official statement.
gurtch Posted October 29, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 29, 2006 I recently bought a 4 GB 150X Ridata SD card specifically for use with the M8. Nowhere does the card say "SDHC" on it. Does this mean it won't work? Thanks Dave

geoff Posted October 29, 2006 Share #11 Posted October 29, 2006 As told directly, in person, from three separate Leica officials, including Christian Erhardt, the M8 does indeed support SDHC memory cards as well as traditional Secure Digital. As far as SD-HC is concerned, I know nothing about them. ;-). The possible reason that 8GB SDHC cards are not currently mentioned is that, even though a couple have been announced, none have actually ship. If Leica adhered to the SD v.2.0 spec, then all future SDHC cards up to the theoretical capacity of SD 2.0, 32GB, will work. My money is on the ATP Class 6 ProMax SDHC 4GB and 8GB cards. Additionally, there are a number of SDHC card readers to be had besides the Sandisk. See my posts on the "Card reader (writer) for Mac OS 9.2.X. and OS X 10.4.X" thread. Sounds to me like a case of CYA. Nevertheless, if the camera conforms to SD v 2.0 specifications this should be PUBLISHED on their site and documents. Furthermore they need to test these already available SD-HC cards ASAP!!! Tom
geoff Posted October 29, 2006 Share #14 Posted October 29, 2006 You can buy Transcend SDHC 8GB cards today. You can order, yes, but is it in stock and shipping? No other vendors have yet to offer this card or any other 8GB SDHC cards. Sounds to me like a case of CYA. Nevertheless, if the camera conforms to SD v 2.0 specifications this should be PUBLISHED on their site and documents. Furthermore they need to test these already available SD-HC cards ASAP!!!Tom I have noticed that Leica marketing is repeatedly deficient when it comes to digital literacy in their documentation. Yes, it would be of benefit for Leica to display the SDHC emblem and clearly state SDHC support. However, Apple doesn't mark up their boxes and computers with "Intel Inside" labels either. I'm not sure how much memory card testing any camera manufacturer actually conducts beyond the top name brands. However, for technical and legal reasons, compatibility is usually not made public until those products have been released to market. I have two M8s on order, with November delivery, and I intend to conduct extensive testing with at least the ATP SDHC products and numerous card readers.
