dkCambridgeshire Posted March 25, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Opportunity arose last week to acquire this early DS Leica M3 S/N 706342 manufactured c.1954 and seen here fitted with an early 50mm Summilux S/N 1884366. The camera has a very clean and bright viewfinder and the shutter appears to be working fine. The are several differences between this model and later M3 cameras notably the lack of a manual frame selector. Looking forward to putting a film through it asap. Cheers dunk

bschererwi Posted March 25, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 25, 2009 Congratulation! It looks very fine with its lens. Regards Bernhard
Erik van Straten Posted March 25, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 25, 2009 Nice M3. Be careful with the vulcanite. If it is still fixed to the body, it's OK, but if not, watch out. If the vulcanite falls of, your beauty is ruined. Erik.
wizard Posted March 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2009 Beautiful piece! And judging by the serial no. of the lens, it should already be the second optical version of that lens (introduced in 1961, but only confirmed years later). Andy
sliceandacoke Posted April 18, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 18, 2009 Very clean for it's age. Love your Lux! Mine has a dent by the counter which has been repaired but left a scar. The flim advance / rewind indicator was changed from a red line to a dot on yours Leitz went from a red line to a single dot to two dots. I have not been able to find out at what point these changes took place. Lot of luck with your new aquisition.
enboe Posted April 18, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 18, 2009 Lovely, and useful, to be sure. One other difference - there was a change of materials and/or mechanism that makes use of a Leicavit a no-no on the early models. The double red dot on the top of the center axis of the rewind knob is when the Leicavit could be used. Eric
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 18, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted April 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are a couple of DS M3 cameras newly listed on "Friday night/Saturday morning" at very reasonable ££ if you know where to look. lars_bergquist Posted April 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 18, 2009 Lovely, and useful, to be sure. One other difference - there was a change of materials and/or mechanism that makes use of a Leicavit a no-no on the early models. The double red dot on the top of the center axis of the rewind knob is when the Leicavit could be used. Eric The use of the Leicavit necessitated a longer take-up spool well for the Leicavit drive to couple to. All M2 cameras had it, but only specially modified M3 cameras (and the original MP of course). The markings on the rewind knob seem to be purely incidental and have nothing to do with the Leicavit. enboe Posted April 20, 2009 Share #11 Posted April 20, 2009 It seems as though we're forming a sub-club of first-year M3 production cameras, so I thought I would join in. A nice find today, #701966 for $525, all in working condition. 708880 went to a friend as a gift. Enjoy.
