Back in the saddle...

Greetings all,

For the last four years I’ve been earning my MS in financial engineering. I finished in December ‘08. Nice timing eh? Anyway, now that I’m not occupying all my ‘free’ time with schoolwork, I’m picking up my cameras and adopting the 'hybrid' workflow. I bought a Nikon LS5000 and am scanning negatives from the past 20 years.

I have used many different kinds of film over this time and I'm noticing that some films are scanning better than others. Specifically, I find that the Kodak films, especially TMax, scan better than the Ilford films. The Ilford shots seem flat. I'm using Vuescan, which means that I need to 'play with the TMax settings' when scanning Delta 400, so I'm not sure how much this affects results.

I'm now shooting with an M7 and Summicron 35 ASPH (and sometimes the M3 with Cron 50, El-M 90, or CV 21). Almost entirely B&W (I'm colorblind and have to have a friend color-correct my color photos). I develop the film in my kitchen (trying Rollei RLS and TMax developers). Having some trouble with static on the film catching dust and cat hairs!

Anyway, I used to be an active member, but haven't posted in a few years. It looks like I'm back to 'new user' status and 0 posts ;) I'm mostly a lurker but will post photos and comments when I feel like I have something useful to contribute.

End of re-introduction.

Erich Wood (Woody)

Welcome back!

We've still got some incredible talents and some incredible achievements here, as well as an interest in keeping up with what's new.

Congratulations on your degree; despite your humor, I doubt it's worth any less than most new degrees in this environment.

And about your new 'beginner' status--the same happened to all of us a couple years back with a major forum software overhaul. :(

Lurker or activist, good that you're back!

Welcome back. Regarding static eletricity attracting dust and cat hair to your negatives. I wonder if a Zerostat gun would help? it was developed to release dust from LP records, and works by bending a piezo electric crystal to emit positive and negative ions. If I can find mine you can try it out. If it works, then you can get one of your own.

Welcome back, Woody.

Also on the dust issue, I have had very good success with the Ilford "Antistaticum" cloths. At least, I think that's the name. I've no idea if they are still produced, but if so, they are an inexpensive way to greatly reduce or eliminate dust spots on scans (and darkroom prints). I just blow off what dust I can, and then give the film a gentle wipe with the anti-static cloth before scanning or printing. In years of using this method, I've never visibly scratched a negative or diapositive. The trick is keep dust from getting into the cloth--as much as possible, anyway.

Good luck,

Brent

Thanks everyone. I do remember the URL changing once or twice a while back when browsing.

Stuart, thanks for the offer. If you find the gun I'd be much appreciative to borrow it. I see they are about $100, which IMO would be worth it if it works. Plus I could use them on my LPs!

Brent, I see they do still sell the cloth for about $10:

Ilford | Antistaticum Anti-Static Cloth - 13 x 13"

This could be a good thing to try too. I've got a new anti-static brush and it does seem to work a little, but I still have static on the negative. (When I put my hand just above it, it moves up to meet me, though it could be static in my hand.)

And no thanks on the radioactive lens :) I think I have enough radiation from the computers I sit in front of for 12 hrs a day!

I've posted some photos of Buzios to the travel section. I'll post some people pics today.

Thx!

Woody
