Lumistu Posted March 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am still torn between getting the 25mm or 21mm Voightlander OVG for my D-Lux 4. I don't care if either blocks the flash (I rarely use it anyway, and would only use the OVF on bright, sunny days). I would like the frame lines to aproximate as much as possible the field of view of the lens when opened all the way to 24mm. Has anyone tried both? If so please advise. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Advertisement Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Hi Lumistu, Take a look here So which is best? Voightlander OVF 21 or 25mm on a DL4 . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Sandokan Posted March 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 15, 2009 I didnt know these lenses fitted the D-Lux 4?
stunsworth Posted March 15, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 15, 2009 I think the original poster is referring to the external viewfinders. In which case the obvious answer is the 25mm, since the camera doesn't go as wide as 21mm
wmyowell Posted March 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 15, 2009 "In which case the obvious answer is the 25mm, since the camera doesn't go as wide as 21mm." I don't think that the answer is obvious, if one is using the 16x9 format. I haven't run any careful tests yet, but my Contax G-2 21mm finder is much closer to the width of the 16x9 format than the Leica finder. I have to confess to being somewhat disappointed at the Leica viewfinder. It presupposes that one will shoot at 4:3 or 3:2 format. Since I rarely shoot at either, it looks pretty but isn't as useful as I'd hoped. My wife used it today and expected that it would change framing with zooming, which of course it doesn't. wmyowell Posted March 16, 2009 Share #8 Posted March 16, 2009 Stuntsworth asked, "Is she by any chance a blonde?" For those who don't get it, this is an amplification of the "dumb blonde" jokes. No, she's not a blonde. Given the misleading information from Leica that the finder had LEDs, it isn't a stretch to expect some adjustments for different focal length settings. I used to have Nikon SPs which had five or so frame lines that could be dialed in for different focal length lenses. Leica rangefinders have automatically resized frame lines for different lenses. For the price, I expected more than one "35mm" frame in a finder which doesn't expect the photographer to use the 16x9 format, which from it appears that most of us use. As I said before, I'm disappointed with the finder and it will take some adjusting to live with its quirks. Bill Yowell
Lumistu Posted March 16, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted March 16, 2009 Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I will go for the 21mm. According to users in other posts it is the best fit for the DL4's 24mm wide angle setting at the 16.9 aspect ratio. I also have an old Leica 28mm viewfinder, which works very well when setting the Zoom bar below the ".", and a really cool and retro looking Petri VF with W and T markigs. I found that the W markings match up very well with the camera's field of vision when I set the zoom bar below the "-" at the the 3.2 aspect ration setting. I really hope that the next generation of D-Lux cameras incorporates a viewfinder. Cheers, Tony
jimbo035 Posted March 16, 2009 Share #10 Posted March 16, 2009 ..... I really hope that the next generation of D-Lux cameras incorporates a viewfinder. Tony if there is one, and it does, it will be a really good alternative to an M8 as far as I am concerned.
