These are from a series of photographs that I took during my downtime on a music video shoot I was on in 1993 or 1994. The shoot was for a group called "Enigma," and the song was called "The Eyes of Truth." I was an Assistant Cameraman at the time. I just had these scanned after all of these years. These images were not made with a Leica, as I did not own one at the time, rather they were made with a Contax T2 and Kodachrome 64. If I had owned a Leica at the time, I certainly would have used it. There are a few more in the series if people wish to see them. Thanks for taking a look.

Thank you guys for the comments. I appreciate the feedback. This is the style of photography I engage in most frequently, what I would call reportage or documentary style.

William, I wish I could figure out how to post them larger. I am woefully ignorant of how the whole internet storing of photographs works. At the moment I am storing most of my photographs on a server/site called "Smugmug.com." Perhaps the limiting factor is their restrictions on file size? I tried two different sized versions (actual display size, not file size), and in previewing how they would show here, they two sizes were displayed exactly the same size, so I don't know what to do. The original scans are absolutely huge (64M), and I could certainly post versions scaled larger than you'd ever want to see on a computer monitor, but I am unsure where the limiting factor lies. I do notice that many photographs posted on this site are larger than these are, so I will have to do some homework to figure it out. Perhaps I need a better server to keep my scans on? Does anyone have any recommendations for sites and or tips on preparing and sizing photographs for optimal display here?

Pete, thank you for the link to the rules. I actually tried to find something of that nature last night regarding such issues. I could not find it. All I found was a FAQ that did not list any such information.

I did, however, contact a member of the forum of to ask about this very issue. I will leave the member's name out of this, but he is a well respected member of the forum who has been around a lot longer than I have. In any case, since some people on this forum had expressed an interest to see some photographs I have shot in the past, and in particular ones from some of my travels on film shoots, I sought the advice before posting.

In short, the advice I was given was to post the photographs, and state clearly that they were not made with a Leica. Since I do own a Leica M6 now and I'm only shooting with that equipment in 35mm since having purchased it, and I have and will continue to post photographs made from it, the suggestion was that it was not a big deal. If I was only posting images made from other equipment and none from Leica gear, then I can see there would be a clear problem.

In my mind, the connection to Leica gear is simply thus: when I made these photographs, it was earlier in my career, and I could not afford a Leica M system, though I aspired to and coveted them. I bought the best compact camera from an optical and build quality standpoint IMO that I could find and afford at the time, and that was a Contax T2. I used that camera until I could finally afford the camera that I had wanted all along. It took me nearly 20 years before I could comfortably buy into the M system.

Also, since I presumed I was not the only photographer that shot with other gear before owning Leica gear, and since this is a subforum that is all about the photography, I thought that there would be interest to see other people's earlier photographic works regardless of equipment that was used to produce the images. I suppose these assumptions were wrong of me to have made especially in light of the rules that state so, and I will be happy to delete this thread, or you may if you wish to on my behalf.

Please know that I tried to do the right thing before posting by searching (unsuccessfully) for rules about posting etiquette around here, and then by asking a forum member of high esteem. I would like to make the small suggestion that there should be a clear link at the top of the Photo Forum with these rules. It may help to prevent faux pas like mine from happening in the future by new members to the forum who haven't yet learned the ropes. Please just say the word if you would like me to delete this thread and these photographs.

Anthony,

Usually I edit the large commercial scans I get in PS Elements 2 which came with my Digilux 1 and re-size and save for web. I'm no geek (understatement) and this allows me to save in the pixel size and file size which I can post here, usually ~ 900 x 600 at 240K.

Don't bother yourself about Pete. When he buys a Leica, then he can complain... :D Meanwhile, we can all benefit from your POV, and a Contax P&S has a lot more in common with a REAL Leica than a PanaLeica EVF in a Digilux 2 (which Pete uses) which (when I did a few shots with Paul Martino's) was a real horror!!!

Coincidentally, Spoke on Skype to the senior moderator here this PM and we looked at these photos . He liked them and had no problem with them. Keep posting. It isn't as if you were posting files from a Canon 5D! :)

William, thanks for the encouraging words. I never intended to get anyone's knickers in a twist by posting these. and I can honestly say that this thread of a handful of images from Nepal and perhaps one or two more photographs from Mongolia that I may post at some point will be the last non-Leica produced images I will ever post here.

Having said that, I have figured out how to size the photgraphs a slightly larger, so first here are resized versions of the original three (I would have edited my first post with these new sized photographs instead of reposting them here, but I no longer seem to have the option of editing it):

Well, first of all my private opinion:

Some of these (very good) shots has more to do with Leica (-style) than a lot of the "real" Leica shots on the forum. My congratulations to the photographer!

As a moderator i have to remind you of our own rules and so i did never give a charter to post non-Leica shots. I say this, because William might got something wrong here! I hope, LADP will keep on posting brilliant pictures (the ones made with the Leica;) ), so the whole forum can learn and benefit from them.

cheers, Rona|d

p.s. My fav is the picture with mother and baby! Very good DOF, damn T2 (a friend has one)

Rona|d, first, a sincere thank you for your comments about the photographs. Second, as per the rules and your request, I will not post any further non-Leica produced photographs on the forum. I am sorry for all the fuss, and take full responsibility for posting them in the first place.

William, you got something wrong here!

Pete IS using a "Leica" when he uses his Digilux 2 and as a moderator I´m not very happy with some parts of your comment.

Anthony,

at some of your pictures i hate our rules (:o ) but maybe we can benefit from them further on. How? if you have an alternative server which can store your non-Leica shots, it would be ok for us if you post a link to this place. There are different places on the web, which allow free webspace for photos! And again, I´d love to see them!

Ron,

Well..., we have made limited exceptions in the past if you will recall, but if you feel in this present environment we can't, even for true Leica-style photography, sobeit. I realize we have some real "spoilers" in Forum III and they can't be encouraged....

Anthony,

No problem then posing links to your SmugMug site until you can post something from your M6, and hopefully you will get another National Geographic assignment very soon!!! :)

A Leica product, but no Leica IMO. I own a Digilux I, but in NO SENSE do I consider it a Leica, even though it has better colors than the Digilux 2. :) On this one we will have to agree to disagree...

Anthony, the photographs are marvelous.

It's truly a privilege to have someone with your remarkable talent and skill around here.

It must be exciting to everyone else, as well as to myself, to anticipate the shots from your M that we'll soon enjoy.

What's the old saying: Rules are made to be broken?

Even though we do stay pretty close to them, there's no doubt about the quality of your images and their importance to a world that seems to have forgotten how to listen to its own heart.

Thanks for sharing.

Looking forward to more!

Allan

Rona|d, fair enough. I'll do that in the future. As I mentioned earlier though, everything I shoot in 35mm now is through a Leica. Thank you,

A

William, I hope so too. Any assignment somewhere exotic with or without NG would be fine by me. I almost went to Japan this week to finish up work on a series of Hitachi commercials that I'm in the midst of shooting, but instead we are going to Tijuana next week. Oh joy.

Allan, thanks for the kind words, but I beg to differ about who's privileged around here. I browse the examples of many of the works of various members (you included by the way) and I'm extremely impressed at the calibre represented here. When it comes to still photography, I consider myself an amateur. A dedicated amateur perhaps, but an amateur nonetheless.

People frequently say "it's not the camera, it's the person behind the camera," and I believe that is largely true, but I find that many of "those people" tend to gravitate towards Leica kit. ;)

William, yes, they were carving a giant wheel for some kind of a cart. The sun was setting and I took that shot in the last minutes of usable light for the Kodachrome 64 considering I didn't have a tripod on me. I do love the magic of Kodachrome.

That photograph reminds me of a story I once heard... probably untrue, but I've never forgotten it. Someone told me that when the first visitors from the West visited the Kingdom of Mustang in Tibet back in the 50's or something like that, they were surprised to find that the technological development of the wheel had never taken place there. The people of Mustang allegedly used sleighs pulled by horses, and devices of that sort, but they had no concept of the wheel as a mechanical conveyance method. I really find that hard to believe, but it makes for a great story.
