Unfortunately i don't find a thread about this topic in English. In german you find something here:

The little numbers indicate the real focal length of the lenses. So the "07" says your Apo-Summicron has 90,7 mm. If you look in the data-sheet of your lenses you will find the exact focal length. The numbers are only on lenses of 50 mm or longer, not on wide-angles (though their real focal length may differ as well).

Long lenses have such critical depth-of-field/focusing that Leica needs to know the exact focal length for servicing and collimation. I think there are about 6-7 "flavors" of 50mm. My 90 Tele-Elmarit is an "00" (dead-on 90.0mm)

The rangefinder accuracy has so much overkill for wide-angle lenses that exact focal length isn't an issue.

It's something that Leica used to do on all longer M lenses, but has I believe dropped from the 75 mm and 90 mm Summarits. (After all, they already share a focusing helicoid, so the external information is no longer necessary.)

From 50 mm upward it was necessary to match a lens head with a specific helicoid. On the DR Summicron (and maybe other Summicron 50s), Leica would sometimes also scratch the serial number of the lens head on the front side of the focusing mount.

There's a lot of history in those two digits! ;)

It's amazing how many people never notice them.
