Giulio Zanni Posted October 25, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, all the attention is focused on the M8 but what about the new tri-elmar? Has anyone touched it or tried it out? When is it going to be available? I don't really shoot longer than 35mm, so this would be THE lens for me if it was not for the $$. I am particularly curios to know how the new finder works from a practical point of view. Many thanks, Giulio
Advertisement Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Hi Giulio Zanni, Take a look here New tri-elmar?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted October 25, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 25, 2006 Giulio, I tried it out at Photokina and it was fine, just a little bigger than the current T-E and all the quality you expect from a handling point of view. It has the interesting ability to focus closer than 0.7m, there's a soft stop on the focussing ring and a secondary distance scale. The hood is as much there to protect the front element from damage as it is to protect the lens from stray light. If used on an M8, the existing 21/24/28 finder will provide the required viewfinder options but of course there are no frames. The new finder has frames so you will see the field of view with space around it. There's aslo a spirit level you can see in the finder which helps you hold the camera vertically. They were only showing prototypes which were locked to 21mm (16mm on an M8) and the image was clear, but noticeable barrel distortion in the image. Here's a picture.... jbondo Posted October 25, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 25, 2006 Wow, that viewfinder looks huge! I want to buy the M8/Tri-Elmar but would prefer to use it without the attachable viewfinder. I mostly shoot from the hip or chest anyway. But my question is, in case I want to focus with accuracy, is it possible to use the built-in viewfinder, or is the focus area obscured by the lens and/or hood? Did I mention that that viewfinder looks HUGE!? Joachim Denmark
ddp Posted October 25, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2006 I believe the viewfinder doubles as an espresso maker.
salvatore Posted October 25, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 25, 2006 A Leica with this lens a this viewfinder loose one of their main advantages: size. With the tri and the viewfinder the camera is like the DSLRs.

jlm Posted October 25, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) you use the standard viewfinder/rangefinder to focus and the exterior viewfinder to frame.
jbondo Posted October 25, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 25, 2006 you use the standard viewfinder/rangefinder to focus and the exterior viewfinder to frame. Right, I forgot that. It's been 8 years since I last used my M6 / 21mm ASPH. Thanks for the clarification.
