USA road racer Posted February 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2009 Has anyone used the V-Lux-1? And what do you think? I have both the V-Lux 1 and a D-Lux 4. I really like the V-Lux 1 for certain types of use. But I've grown much fonder of the D-Lux4 with it's use. I tried to shoot photos at the Grandson's indoor basketball games with both cameras. I get much better results with the D-Lux4 because if the faster lense. The flash is useless trying to shoot at those distances. Need to get a big flash~ at least one with a guide # of 36. Hope Metz gets off their butts & gets a TTL flash that is smaller than a club for either camera. Now for outdoor photos, the V-Lux 1 really shines! There isn't much difference indoors with usable flash distances. I have found that the D-Lux 4 has many more features that the V-Lux 1 doesn't have that makes the D-Lux4 a more useful tool in creative photography. But if you can make use of that big zoom lense on the V-Lux 1, I believe that you would have to go into the big & expensive DSLRs to even get close. It is larger than the D-Lux4 bur I got it to take wildlife photos to begin with. If it could do everything the D-Lux4 could do, it would be the perfect camera for anything in it's size & weight & cost range. I use both at the same time doing landscape photography in the deserts of Arizona. And wildflower season will be here soon! All in all, I really do like the camera. Just needs a real flash & all will be good to go!!
jimleicam3 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted February 27, 2009 Thanks for the info, right now I used the M 8, but am looking for an autofocus camera. My wife uses a G9 which is also a great camera, but it is hers so I need to find one of my own.
Tenor1 Posted February 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2009 I have a D-Lux 4, V-Lux-1 and a Canon G-10. The DL4 and G-10 are similar to one another. The GL4 does better in low light without flash but doesn't have the 5x zoom of the G-10. The battery life on the G-10 is incredible allowing you to shoot around 400 photos on one charge plus it has a minimal viewfinder. I would choose the DL4 over the G-10 even with the handicaps I've mentioned. It makes a better picture, in my opinion. The V-Lux 1 has a great zoom on it but the pictures seem a bit soft compared to both the other models. The battery life is great due to the manual zoom feature. It's a bit heavy to carry around compared to the other cameras I've mentioned. I would rate them this way: 1. D-Lux 4 2. Canon G-10 3. V-Lux 1 I also have a D2 and rate that higher than the three above.
atournas Posted February 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2009 I own a V-Lux 1, mainly used for travel and landscape photography. If you ignore the bulky body+lens, the camera isn't less functional than all the previous Leica digital compacts. However, the extended focal length shows in producing rather soft images, especially compared to M and R results. In my opinion, one should always consider using a tripod or any similar support if aiming at real Leica-quality shots. Paul
