JHAG Posted February 27, 2009 Author Share #21 Posted February 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) For hands-on information please contact a former member of the then East German "Ministerium für Statssichderheit" a.k.a "Stasi". They did this all the time with their long lenses. The only problem would be that these guys have such short memories. And that they use rose coloured filters when they look back. You gave me a title : Long view, short memory. I'll phone Markus (Wolf) instantly.

JHAG Posted February 27, 2009 Author Share #22 Posted February 27, 2009 Did you ever see the film Blowup? Of course. But in my memory, he never shoots so far.
rick_dykstra Posted March 2, 2009 Share #23 Posted March 2, 2009 500m is a long way, but with good technique and slow film it would be possible to recognise a person's face on film. Technique would involve a good carbon fibre tripod, an Arca Swiss ball head, a long lens support, mirror pre-release and cable release. Shooting down on a steep angle would be a significant help, as it reduces the degree of ground level mirage that would effect the shot. Best to take the picture in the early morning, just before the sun's rays illuminate the scene, creating mirage. Have a look at my site below to get some ideas. An 800/5.6 with an APO 2x extender makes a handy 1600/f11 lens, which has 6m horizontal field of view at 500m. With ISO 100 film, shots at 1/60th wide open are quite feasible. Wait for the wind to drop right off.
