jevidon Posted February 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are the "goggles" specific to a particular DR lens, or does one set of 'goggles" work for all DR lenses regardless of focal length; i.e., 35mm, 50mm, etc.? Philippe D. Posted February 23, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2009 Hi, Are the "goggles" specific to a particular DR lens, or does one set of 'goggles" work for all DR lenses regardless of focal lengthEach lens has his own google. You can't lend them to another lens.
Shootist Posted February 23, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2009 Are the "goggles" specific to a particular DR lens, or does one set of 'goggles" work for all DR lenses regardless of focal length; i.e., 35mm, 50mm, etc.? Sorry yes I agree with the post above. Each focal length lens has it's own set of goggles, they are not interchangeable from one FL to another.. I didn't read your full question before I read the first reply, that is why I posted the response below. There is NO DR (Dual Range) 35mm lens. So when I read DR I didn't realize you were also asking about other focal length lenses also. On all other FL lenses the goggles are attached, semi permanently (Screwed on), and with the 50mm DR they can be clipped on or remove easily. Hi,Each lens has his own google. You can't lend them to another lens. I really don't think that is correct. Although the set of goggles that came with each lens may match slightly better then say any other set of goggles all should work on any lens. The only thing the goggles do is correct the parallax and adjust for focusing. In any event you can have the goggles matched to the specific lens if you find they don't work correctly. wizard Posted February 23, 2009 Share #4 Posted February 23, 2009 Are the "goggles" specific to a particular DR lens ... Well, yes and no. There were at least two types of goggles for the 50mm DR-Summicron lens. Those two types were not interchangeable, that is they can only be mounted on lenses of the corresponding type. So you may be lucky and find goggles that do in fact mount on the lens you have (and if they mount, they should work correctly), but you also may be unlucky and end up with goggles of the other type that do not mount on the specific lens you own. It is hard to tell the two types of goggles apart, they look almost the same, so it is basically trial and error. For this reason, I would not buy a DR lens without matching goggles. Oh, and BTW, as already pointed out, there is just ONE DR lens, the 50 mm Summicron. Other lenses have goggles, too, e.g. the 35 mm lenses for the Leica M3, but those goggles are usually rigidly mounted to the lens and should not be dismounted (I know, I know, there have been 35mm variants with detachable goggles, but those are rare and Leitz/Leica soon stopped making them, for a reason). tobey bilek Posted February 23, 2009 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2009 Wizard has it right. I will add the first DR50 with heavy bright chrome has matching goggles with the word Leitz in a oval. The later DR 50 has a script Leitz ( longhand cursive) in its place and matches later satin chrome lenses. Other than the logo, they look identical to the eye. The are interchangeable to some extent, but not 100%. Both have prisims to allow parallax correction in close focus 35 mm eyes reduce the image size. 135 mm eyes magnify it. Few realize that there were two optical versions of the DR/Rigid series.

What i wanted to say is that a 35 Summilux google or a 35 Summicron google can not be exchanged with the 50 summicron DR google. That's all.

I knew that 2 version of the DR exist... one focusing to 19" and the other (after a certain s/n that I do not remember) to 20" , and also knew of the two different engravings... but I thought that the goggle unit was identical in optics. Do you know if the 3 variations happened at the same time (I mean, engraving, optic of the goggles, minimum focus distance) ? Seem to remember vaguely that the variation of distance was indeed at 2.2xx.xxx or so ...
jevidon Posted February 24, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted February 24, 2009 Thanks for all your responses. You saved me from buying a DR Summicron w/o the goggles. As it happened, after finding a few Ex+ and "LN- " lens + goggle sets at high prices ($850-$1000), the very reputable N.Y. Leica dealer Tamarkin had one in stock for a lot less which they rated at Ex+++. I know that if it is not acceptable, they will take it back; a problem that is always possible with Ebay or overseas sellers. I am expecting it in three days and according to all the favorable comments on the DR Summicron in this forum and RFF, I am looking forward to getting it. Thanks again to all of you.
