Am just about to buy an M3 had it reserve and made a deposit. It is with 50mm 1.2 lens.the cost is around $900 (U.S) .I already own an M2 and i have a 35mm and a 50mm, the problem is the winder knob fell off and I cannot rewind the film except thru a black cloth and unloading the film manually...anyway I love using the 35mm on the M2 but the M3 I understand only accepts the 50,90 and 135mm lenses while the M2 35,50 and 135. I dont know where to get the goggle, dont think can get it around here. if i use the 35mm on the M3 without the goggle, what do I get ? cut frames?

You can mount any 35 mm on M3: simply, if you have a "goggled" 35, you have a correct frame inside the VF, otherwise you must guess or use an external VF (there are many... the "classic" and probably the better is the old Leitz code SBLOO).

There is another small difference on minimum focus distance: 35s for M2 focus to 0,7 or 1 m, while goggled 35s focus down to 0,65m.

Is it REALLY a 1.2/ 50 mm lens ?

If it´s a LEITZ- lens it should say NOCTILUX somewhere on the front. Then you should hurry up at once and buy the gear no matter how the camera looks behind the lens. Otherwise your seller might think about the deal again.

The lens alone should be worth between 5,000 and 10,000 Dollars in case it is in good shape !

The deal would be very o. k. with a 2/ 50 mm lens (a SUMMICRON) or even the body alone ...

Have a nice weekend and enjoy your deal.

Most pros did not use the goggled 35mm lenses, but worked with an accessory finder. This meant of course that there was no room for a Leicameter, but pros did eschew that too. They knew how to expose film without these newfangled meter things, or they imagined that they did. (Henri Cartier-Bresson's contact sheets are said to reveal that he often got the exposure wrong ...)

Still, the M2 did quickly become the 'pro Leica' because the pros had fallen in love with the 35 view, and the M2 had it in the finder.

Thanks for all the response; realy appreciate it.The lens is a summicron and both the M3 and the 50mm lens were in excellent condition.Am realy looking forward to be able to use it extensively.I have used the M2 for almost 15 years, its still faultless except for the missing rewinder knob; I wonder if you know where I can get hold of that little part or what I heard is that there is a modified crank made to make it easier to rewind the film.

so if I understood it right if I did not have a 35 goggle for the M3,I'd have to self calculate thru trial and error how, more or less, my frame line should be .I guess its the 50mm frameline that will appear first?

I already do the meterless habit after all these years and have gotten the hang of it.But frameline simulation should be interesting. It would be shooting with one eye on the view finder and the other on the object in front.

the last thing is I have in the past been shooting with ILFORD or KODAK black and white negatives; lately however,by chance, when I could not find film around I settled with the cheapest I could find called LUCKY (from China) I had it processed and scanned the negatives. They were not bad at all...however I noticed that the film is soft and thin compared to the firmness of the known brands.Does that mean that this brand might have a poor archival quality? Has anybody used this film? Any opinions? Thanks again

And

Leica M

Scroll down the page to find the re-wind assembly.

This is the whole re-wind assembly.

Or you could send it to DAG to have it fixed and a CLA.

This is the external viewfinder I quoted above (SBLOO) : many available surfing on the net - prices in ranges from 150 to 500 Euros (top prices are for collectibles: perfect, with box, leather case...) : it's the best solution to complement a M3 (it was announced with M3, before the introduction of "goggled" 35s).

Or, if you don't care of "vintage look", there is a modern 35 Viewfinder made by Cosina Voigtlander, available (new) at around 150 US$ if I remember well (see www.cameraquest.com)

Of course, you need RF focus in the M3 viewfinder, then switch to the external... not such a hassle... I got accustomed for years to act like this.

I have shot a 35 Cron on my M3 without too many problems. Just think of the entire viewfinder as a 35 frameline. You will get a very small extra amount of image, but you can always crop :)

I did the same thing with an M6 TTL .085 and a 28 Elmarit. I should have never sold that combination, darn it!

thanks for the link for the DAG95 item..will try order it right away.Although the assembly has the lever and something to be screwed on,wonder if it is complicated to install it myself.

if there is very little difference regarding frameline size between 35mm on an M3 and its native 50mm then perhaps I can live with it.The goggle attached to lens will look and feel so clunky; though the sbloo looks tolerable but just..

Nice to know the Dag place..prices of parts looks reasonable
