What's with scanning Kodachrome?

I followed discussions on the forum at the end of last year about scanning Kodachrome transparencies. The correspondents all said whether they could or could not, and with what equipment and results, but nobody explained what the possible difficulty might be. I now have an Epson V700 flatbed and would welcome some explanation so I can understand what I should be looking for, leading to how I might avoid/rectify problems - if at all. The picture on the thread last year looks fine to me. I use Photoshop elements 6 for adjustments.

Any explanation would be welcome.

Can you post a link to that thread for everyone's ease, please?

Thanks

I scan Kodachromes on my Nikon Coolscan V without any problem. The ICE functions fine (some say that it doesn't). I always scan my slides as "Images" in Vuescan, not as "slides".

Why not scan something see how you go then ask specific questions about any problems you encounter. Plenty of guys in here have scanned the stuff, one bloke shoots it in preference to everything else while he can still get it. You are bound to get the assitance and answers you need.

I have tackled Epson about "possible" problems and the following is their reply which explains the situation........

"...... there are no issues with scanning Kodachrome transparencies themselves however you will not be able to use the Digital ICE software.

Digital ICE works by using infrared light to identify physical imperfections in or on the film separately from image detail captured by the emulsion, and then render the detail without the imperfections.

Kodachrome colour transparency film is not recommended because the dyes attenuate the Infrared light in ways that are substantially different than all other film. Therefore they the images may exhibit under or over correction.

Digital ICE also does not support conventional black and white film because the silver retained in the film scatters the Infrared light which causes an inaccurate record of defects found during the scanning process.

You can choose all other settings within Epson Scan as you normally would."

They then went on to show THEIR confidence in the product by offering me a £40 extended warranty. I assume that means that they are confident that I shall experience problems with the Scanner at some time in the next 4 years!
