You would think they could have a small stand, it is the end of February, and we want to see the new lenses and speak to experts!

FOCUS ON IMAGING 2009

I'm going on the opening day, Sunday.

Anyone else likely to be there?

John

Your'e assuming there are multiple working examples of the new lenses (presuming you mean the 'luxes and nocti) to show! ;)

I've mentioned in a couple of other threads that I've never seen Leica UK at Focus, or any other UK venue for that matter, in recent times. ChrisC did say that they used to attend a while ago, but they certainly seem to be running silent and deep at the moment.

Monday, or possibly Tuesday, for me.

Avoiding an ear-bashing by a cohort of UK dealers by lying low after the price increase and the removal of the M8 discount, perhaps?

I don't think that Leica UK have many staff to spare to send out to trade shows.

However, I do know that their sole M technician doubles up as a binocular sales person at trade fairs (or at least did do 2 years ago), so it pays to know when "Twitchers Live '09" is happening if you want him to fix your M in MK. If he's out with Kate Humble, you will have to wait.

To put on a respectable show at Focus would cost Leica about £50,000. They probably prefer to spend that on product launches. Canon's spend there is likely to be more than £250,000. A lot of additional M8.2's to pull their cost back.

A low cost shell stand against the wall would do nothing positive for the company's image.

Rolo :)

I agree that a poor stand wouldn't look good, especially in comparison to the big guns, and maybe the money is needed elsewhere. However, what does non attendance do for the company's image I wonder? Given that most of the other manufacturers will be there. And let's not forget the professional market (photographers, studios and pro rental gear stockists) at which the S2 is meant to be targeted.

I suspect that Leica just don't see Focus as important enough to justify the likely cost of attending. Unlike the much larger photokina and PMA, not much chance of them missing either of those exhibitions I'll bet;).

Two companies I have worked for stopped attending most 'trade fairs'. Attendance is often sparodic and apart from being seen to be there, the tangible benefits were few.

I am guessing Leica are just concentrating their efforts on the International trade fairs such as PMA and Photokina. Sensible IMO if disappointing for some.

"Trade fairs" offer a very poor return on investment. You either have to make a big splash or not attend - there is nothing in between. They are populated by gawkers and tyre-kickers - the real business is done elsewhere. Focus is a sideshow - only of interest to a parochial few. I'm glad Leica are spending their money elsewhere.

Regards,

Bill
