calshot Posted February 7, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have recently installed Lightroom 2 on my Dell Dim 3100. When opening up pictures in Raw from my LC1 a noticeable delay occurs whilst the picture settles into focus. Thinking this was a memory problem I upgraded the memory to 2mbyte. Nothing much has changed. So is this a normal thing with Lightroom? Am I doing something wrong? Is my PC old and in need of a change. Any help would be great. Advertisement Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Hi calshot, Take a look here Lightroom Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sandymc Posted February 7, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2009 It's fairly normal. What's happening is that LR is initially displaying the thumbnail taht's part of the file, then re-rendering a full version from the raw data, with all your settings. A faster machine will make the re-rendering a bit faster, but you will still see the change. Sandy

Rob It happens with me when I zoom into the actual pixel level on a picture in Lightroom. A message appears stating that Lightroom is 'rendering' the image. In my estimation, Lightroom is a 'slow' piece of software. How 'old' is your PC? LouisB
calshot Posted February 8, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted February 8, 2009 Thanks for the info. LouisB my machine is about 3/4 years old.I can live with it as long as I know it's sort of normal. Does Lightroom work any better on an iMac? Rob
Marquinius Posted February 8, 2009 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2009 LR2 works fab on a Mac. I installed 2.5 Gb RAM and followed Five Ways to Speed Up Lightroom - O'Reilly Digital Media Blog these tips. Marco
Shootist Posted February 8, 2009 Share #6 Posted February 8, 2009 Yes this is normal. Buy a newer PC with the fastest CPU and the most RAM you can afford. I run LR on my home PC, fairly new and fast, and on my work PC, very old and slow. the difference is image load speed is amazing. Home PC, almost instantaneous, work PC, like watching paint dry or grass grow.

vikasmg Posted February 22, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 22, 2009 Does Lightroom work any better on an iMac? I do like my Mac but as to whether it works any better or worse I don't know. I have a very new MacBook Pro and I still see that delay. - Vikas
johnbuckley Posted February 24, 2009 Share #9 Posted February 24, 2009 LR works wonderfully on a Mac. However, to be clear, even with 3Gigs of memory, on occasion, it will take a second to render an image, and you get the text saying so. It doesn't happen for all images, just some. It's not a big deal to me.

Rob Rob, have you explored the option in LR to render larger previews after you have downloaded files. (Library>Previews>Render 1:1 previews)? You can select a batch of images and render bigger previews as a background operation while you are occupied on other non-Lightroom tasks. They do take up disk space, so once I have used the 1:1 previews for editing evaluation, I delete them; but the enhanced loading speed does make it worthwhile, in moderation. Sorry to be adding this note so late after your initial posting.
epand56 Posted August 6, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 6, 2009 LR2 works fab on a Mac. I installed 2.5 Gb RAM and followed Five Ways to Speed Up Lightroom - O'Reilly Digital Media Blog these tips. Marco Marco, thank you for the link, very usefull. It is never too late... However, I find LR quite speedy on my Mac. If it were more quick i couldn't even have the time to think at what I'm doing. In my case, the slower is me...

Marco Very nice tips, but be aware of that if you have many thousand pictures in one catalog, the database file will be very large if you have all your pics renered 1:
calshot Posted August 10, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted August 10, 2009 Thats OK David. Yes I used the information posted and looked at the Rilley site. Now I render 1:1 previews after loading. Its still a bit slow but I am sure enough that it's the PC so will upgrade in the future. Rob
cmatter Posted August 30, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 30, 2009 You def. need a new, faster, more powerful PC. Especially with Lightroom. it's a memory hog for sure Personally.. I'd forget Lightroom. ACR with Bridge is more versaitle and powerful.. without all the bells and whistles that make Lightroom the resource hog that it is.
ryee3 Posted September 19, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 19, 2009 Hi: It also may be the software... Have you tried optimizing the catalog? Go to the Lightroom menu: Edit/catalog settings/relaunch and optimize. It has help me in the past. I do it often when Lightroom is slow. Hope that helps.
