Isn't the answer to all this , just to say " I've got items for disposal" and then for anyone interested at all, to make contact by email?

Would be a possibility, BUT a separate Thread would be preferrable. So you do not have to deal with that if you do not want.

Maybe it's been mentioned before, but one of the good things about a forum which is frequented by a certain percentage of regulars is that trading-selling-and buying equipement becomes a much more comfortable thing to do, as opposed to the bif auction site.

Through various fori I have bought traded and sold stuff, all without a single problem. It is a pity that this is not allowed here.

....Why Leica doesn't want any trading on this forum is a mystery to me. I would have thought it establishes a market and marketvalue that is fair -as opposed to the sillyness of Ebuh- and provides entree level access to great gear for new enthusiasts (followed by a lifetime addiction). Who then can graduate to joy of lusting after and acquiring of (mostly)new leica gear.

Well, maybe because Leica have interest to sell new product. When trading of secondhand products, manufacturer doesn't make money, only by selling new products. So, for me is comepletely understandeable that manufacturer does not want on its forum to allow trading secondhand products. Of course, I can be comepletely wrong with this.

besides ebay, there are other good photo sites for sellling and buying such as:

http://www.photogon.com

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost-classifieds/index.php

Having a classifieds section is a good thing on the forum. You may want to reconsider doing so or convince Leica to go along with it. There tends to be a trust factor with forum members that you don't get on ebay.

Haris,

I do understand what Leica aims for; trying to make a profit being their number one priority (even well respected companies sometimes seriously muck things up trying to achieve this), retaining its current customers and selling additional gear to them is another. They also must attract new customers and with the 'list' prices Leica charges for new cameras and lenses this becomes more and more unlikely.

Sure some people will be given a new camera as a present and some will reward themselfs with the best they can buy, but most will start off with cheaper secondhand gear and keep buying and sometimes selling( bit like buying your first car really). This buying is likely used gear in the beginning but later -as earning capacity and wealth increase- new equipment will be acquired as well. Hence the creation of new customers and more sales for Leica.

The argument I am trying to make is that for Leica to ban the selling/buying on this forum could potentionally be shortsighted.

I furthermore believe that it is in Leica's interest that there is a good secondhand market. Part of the attaction of Leica ownership is that in a world of deflation (try getting your money back on a 5 year old canon, nikon or even hasselblad) your Leica equipment holds it value better than most. A safe trading environment -this forum seems to be better than any other place- would keep that attraction alive. As an aside this secondhand Leica gear is competing directly with new gear from competitors - do you buy that new zeiss lens or go for used Leica at about the same price? - so Leica is competing here at a lower price point with competitors and whilst not gaining directly here it isn't losing sales to competitors.

Secondhand Leica buyers are future Leica 'new' buyers.

Anyway I understand from previous postings that Leica mangement will soon be making an annoucement regarding this.

Greetings

Gerrit

I'm sure it's been said before but many of us sell used Leica equipment to fund the purchase of new stuff [ DMR - M8 ?] so there are circumstances where Leica would get a direct benefit from allowing trading/selling on this forum.

I can't see that banning it from here is going to change anything either,as people are still going to sell etc - just elsewhere.

I seem to have stepped on a landmine here.....For what it's worth I've been buying used leica gear since 1971. Other than the odd point and shoot stuff, it has ALL been used. I'm the guy who buys the used stuff so you other guys can go get the new stuff with the ROMS and whatnot. I'll never forget that (now sorely missed) used M2 I bought from Harold at the local (now defunct) camera shop. Come to think of it Harold is defunct as well. He made me a special deal so I could "afford" the $200 for the camera including a Summarit 50mm.

Like sellin' crack to a teenager, that was.

If Leica doesn't want a used market they should dumb down their quality by quite a bit.

Thanks again Harold!!

That ban sure did not work, business is as per usual just drop a casual line in a close enough thread or place it in your footnote. Then again act innocent and start a new thread and say sorry. There will be heaps of fire sales coming up with the M8 on the way, these tactics are well on the way

We may as well get used to it and just let the sales begin, unless the moderators check each thread before it goes on line.

Not buying not selling and no longer care.... about film

I suspect Leica's greatest compitition for new sales of their products is sales of their used products. Why subsidize those transactions in any way?

One of the downsides of making products that last longer than the original owners do.

They don't want it, probably because they quite rightly want to be seen to support their dealers, who rely on s/h sales as much as new sales.

Also, S/H sales is, somehow, an indication of good and bad equipments. Noticed how many R 28-70 f/3.5-4.5 lenses are available for sales, which indicated that it is not as good as other R lenses.

Oh for goodness' sake chaps!

There are many ways to sell stuff that do not involve this forum. A rule has been set, and it is a reasonable one.

If you were a smoker and you were invited to a non--smoking friend's house, would you spend your time arguing how unfair it was that you were not allowed to light up in their home?

Regards,

Bill
