Advertisement Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hi adli, Take a look here "Do you know the world ?" -- Competition --. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vertekijker Posted January 5, 2012 Share #9342 Posted January 5, 2012 I have never been in the area, Adli, so I'm totally relying on Google... I found a picture of the hotel, but no name, only: 'strange hotel near Chamonix'... strange hotel near Chamonix by ~miulian on deviantART Maybe someone else has actually been there? I'll keep looking. --------------- Frans
pop Posted January 5, 2012 Share #9343 Posted January 5, 2012 No one has commented as yet on the rack railway whose track appears to be on the right hand side of the image. It must be either that or a funiculaire (cable car).

pop Posted January 5, 2012 Share #9346 Posted January 5, 2012 Thank you, Frans. You're most gracious as I worked from the clues you provided. I'm willing to place a (smallish) bet on it being the Grand Hotel Montenvers near Chamonix.
adli Posted January 5, 2012 Share #9347 Posted January 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) That is correct! You can reach the 100 years old hotel by train from Chamonix. 5 km, 870 meters height difference up to 2000 meters where the hotel is located. Or you can take the cabel car up to Aiguille du Midi at 3800 meters and ski down Vallee Blanche to the hotel. Over to you.

Guest suilvenman Posted January 6, 2012 Share #9357 Posted January 6, 2012 Would that tree be a good clue as a starting point to guess this location, Lutz? Ken.
sunafan Posted January 6, 2012 Share #9358 Posted January 6, 2012 Well Ken, it's not necessarily the tree, although this one is pretty dominant. I have to admit that the photo does not really contain a secure clue for the location, but I know that many guys (not from the old world) know this place, at least by name, and many of them visited that area as well. There are of course subjects that would be much more significant for this place, but it should be not too easy. Here is another one, taken only seconds after the photo shown above, I just turned the camera a little to the right. And yes, this one has a clue in it (not too obvious of course). Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Geschlecht Posted January 7, 2012 Share #9359 Posted January 7, 2012 Hello Lutz, The tree in the first photo looks like a cousin of a Sugar Pine from Northern California. Sugar Pines are generally not quite that wide @ the bottom & often have foliage which begins a little higher. They also can be somewhat taller. The landscape in the 2d photo looks like Northern California to the South East of where Sugar Pines grow. Northern California? vertekijker Posted January 7, 2012 Share #9360 Posted January 7, 2012 Is that a tiny bit of an American flag showing on the right? --------------- Frans
