stuny Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6966 Posted February 11, 2011 Jim - This reminds me of four different cities in Europe. I can't get any closer than that.

aarflot Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6968 Posted February 11, 2011 It could certainly look like southern France, but very hard to say.

geaibleu Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6970 Posted February 11, 2011 This church has no style whatsoever, ie a distinct style that would pertain to any of the Roman, Gothic, Baroque, or modern eras that are worth visiting. Thus what we have here is a village that has been progressively influenced by people like Pie IX for the need of the growth of the RC church, and could be located almost anywhere. The narrowness of the street and the paucity of light should indicate an impoverished rural area. Yet there are so many of those in France and surrounding European states, that unless you do know the place, the chances of finding it are 0. This being said, the picture is quite good offering a stark contrast between artificial light and dark stones and pavement. It is therefore a good achievement to associate mystery to a rather banal village.
Dirk Van der Herten Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6971 Posted February 11, 2011 Are we in northern France, Jim? Département du Nord?
Jim-St Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6972 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) @geaibleu : the village is of a certain renown, though if you go there seeking chocolat you may be disappointed. The church predates Pius IX by several centuries, and is classed as Gothic Its character may be more cinegenic than photogenic, or that may just be my poor camerawork, by comparison with the work of the cinematographer @Dirk Van der Herten : we are in the northern part of France, but south and a little bit east of Nord. geaibleu Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6975 Posted February 11, 2011 Jim, I do not mind being corrected, and now that I have checked further I certainly can't argue. Nonetheless its real beauty , again from what I have read, is inside, and the night picture you provided only shows the silhouette of a massive form that is quite opposite to the usual "Flamboyant gothic". Furthermore, the church tower is lacking the expected elegance of the same period. Daytime pictures are a bit more revealing but show intensive modifications which are misleading to the admittedly uneducated eye. Chocolat was indeed a good film... Chocolat was indeed a good film... The interior of the church is indeed worth a visit, but the exterior too has a real & brooding presence which I think was evident in the film and the reality off the place. If my picture did not convey that it has failed. Ho hum... Welcome, dear visitor!
