Hmmm.... Just across the street from Café Bar "At Saint Jan". I am still stumped. Is this a Czech novelist?

You must be literally not even a few hundred metres from the building's location, Jan. The novelist was born in Germany. The number is indeed 12 on the photo but does look like 4 - my underdeveloped digital skills, Jan - apologies. The second photo gave a big clue. Another hint - Napoleon.

Street address is Šporkova 12 and that is the extent of information I was able to 'dig up'... The only significant person that lives in the area is an old school friend of mine who was not born in Germany, nor does she have any literary abilities. ;)

The 'Johannesberg G' sign in your photo is the original German name for Jánský vršek - Johann equals Jan nad 'Berg' being the German equivalent of Czech 'Vršek'. G stands for Gasse - lane or street.

So there - I still don't have an answer for you, Ken.

Best,

Jan

You are so close, Jan, that I think I must declare you the winner. The writer is indeed W G Sebald and the novel is "Austerlitz" in which the narrator's mother once "lived" at Sporkova 12. A great modern novel, IMHO.

Over to you, Jan.

Ken.

Thanks, Ken. Happy to know about another book to read. Interestingly, when I did my research, the most recent book by Sebald I could find was 'For Years Now'; Austrelitz did not come up.

For the next challenge, I was torn between two subjects and picked the one I hope to be more difficult. I will need to know the city where this photograph was taken.

Good luck,

Jan

I thought this was going to be a tough one and had many subtle hints ready to guide the weary travellers......

Yes - 'downtown' Skagway, Alaska it is. One of the main thoroughfares....

Over to you, Michael.

Best,

Jan

No need to wait, I had smething more recent - and perhaps more obscure!

In what city is this building located?

It was used in a film that helped Faye Dunaway in her career.

Jan, You've definitely got it right.

Quick question to the group- Being a new Leica owner, my image selection from exotic locations is relatively limited. Must all images in this thread originate from Leica gear?

Thanks.

Thanks, Steve!

Most qualified answer to your query should probably come from Stuart but, it is my understanding that the requirement for posting photographs on this forum is for some sort of Leica gear. A Panasonic PS with a Leica lens will do, a Leica camera with a Lausar triplet lens will do as well.;)

I have to admit though, that the photo of the Café Bar of St. Jan posted earlier in this thread was taken with a Sony Cybershot, in my pre-digital Leica days - read that as before I got my first digital Leica. I started using Leicas during times when autofocus was just a figment of a mad designer's imagination..... The Sony did have a Zeiss lens though....:p

I would not have posted that photograph though, to start a new competition, it was done simply to show Ken that I visited 'just around the corner' from his scene.

Best,

Jan

Jan, that too was to quick!

Back to you.

For those not in "the know", this bank building was used in the movie Bonnie & Clyde directed and starring Warren Beaty in 1967. The movie "introduced" us to Faye Dunaway and another unknown, Gene Hackman.

For the next challenge I will need to know where this photo was taken and for extra points, its name.

Good luck,

Jan
