andalus Posted June 1, 2010 Share #4447 Posted June 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Siena?
Dirk Van der Herten Posted June 1, 2010 Share #4448 Posted June 1, 2010 Not Sienna, sorry. The city is even older than Rome, and it used to be an important center of a people whose Roman name is at the origin of a well-know Italian region. The name of the city is very similar to the name of one of the ancient kings of this people.
vertekijker Posted June 1, 2010 Share #4449 Posted June 1, 2010 It must be in Padua then... The region, Padania. ------------ Frans
Guest suilvenman Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4450 Posted June 2, 2010 Photo taken from the Vitelleschi Palace in Tarquinia? Cheers, Ken.
Dirk Van der Herten Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4451 Posted June 2, 2010 Sorry, Frans, it is not Padua. You hit the target, Ken! Over to you. Beste groeten, Dirk
Dirk Van der Herten Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4452 Posted June 2, 2010 Note: as to the name of the region: the name of the people was the Etruscans (or Tusci in Latin) -> Toscana.
Guest suilvenman Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4453 Posted June 2, 2010 Thanks, Dirk. The path to finding the answer was very informative, which, I think, is one of the great benefits of this thread. For this next one, I think the background city (hint!) is maybe quite easy so, as an extra variation on the thread, I'd like to know not only the city where this photo was taken but also the name of the novel in which a character "lived" in this building. The building's number is Twelve. The novel was written after 2000. Good luck, Ken. Welcome, dear visitor! Guest suilvenman Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4454 Posted June 2, 2010 Apologies - I should have said that the novel was published (not written) after 2000. Ken.
Dirk Van der Herten Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4455 Posted June 2, 2010 A pure guess: Prague, Milan Kundera's novel Ignorance.
Guest suilvenman Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4456 Posted June 2, 2010 Very good start, Dirk: it is Prague but not Kundera. Ken.
a.j.z Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4457 Posted June 2, 2010 (edited) Arthur Phillips, Prague? Edited June 2, 2010 by a.j.z
Guest suilvenman Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4458 Posted June 2, 2010 Not Phillips, Andreas. Hint: this novelist often used photos to accompany the text. (Actually two hints.) Cheers, Ken.
doubice Posted June 3, 2010 Share #4459 Posted June 3, 2010 Ken, I just happened upon this after a long absence from the Net - the fact that this is Prague is beyond any doubt. I even know roughly where we are - above Small Town Square (Malostranské náměstí), below the Castle, around a street called Jánský vršek? I know this city inside out, from numerous walks but, cannot place this photo. The house number seems to be 4, not 12.... Stumped...... Jan
Guest suilvenman Posted June 3, 2010 Share #4460 Posted June 3, 2010 Time for another clue. I knew you would know this area, Jan. Ken. Welcome, dear visitor!
