stuny Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1542 Posted June 18, 2009 No idea, but the image suggests significant annual rain and a temperate climate (not unlike your hometown).
Olsen Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1543 Posted June 18, 2009 This way of making walls is typical in the US, - and Canada, may be. It is the same technique as roofs were made in parts of Russia, Finland and Scandinavia, 100 years back, or so. Somewhere in the Rockies...? (Could it be the back door of a defunct S & L we are seeing...?).
doubice Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1544 Posted June 18, 2009 Significant annual rain - yes. Not as temperate as Vancouver, though. The wall construction hint - yes, Russia may have had something to do with it..... Not in the Rockies; what is an S & L? Best, Jan
Olsen Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1545 Posted June 18, 2009 S & L = a Savings & Loans. Anchorage?
doubice Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1546 Posted June 18, 2009 S & L = a Savings & Loans. I get it now! You should have added a 'winkie' to your post.... Anchorage? Good guess! Not that far north though.. Good luck, Jan
psquared Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1547 Posted June 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just guessing with "Russian influence" and "south of Anchorage" in mind. An Aleutian island?
doubice Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1548 Posted June 18, 2009 Hi Peter, The Russian influence used to extend further to the east, as well as south than the Aleutians or Anchorage...... Best, Jan
vertekijker Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1549 Posted June 18, 2009 I saw similar structures in Fort Ross, in Northern California. ------------ Frans
doubice Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1550 Posted June 18, 2009 Hello Frans, Fortunately, Russian influence never extended THAT far south...... Best, Jan
vertekijker Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1551 Posted June 18, 2009 But it did, Jan - check the information on Fort Ross, for example in Wikipedia: 'Fort Ross is a former Russian establishment on the Pacific Coast in what is now Sonoma County, California in the United States.' Are you thinking maybe of Sitka? ------------ Frans
doubice Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1552 Posted June 18, 2009 (edited) Sorry, It is not Sitka. As to Fort Ross, that was just a short-lived Russian settlement on the Californian coast, the Russians never really colonized it, as they did Alaska. And I have to revise my mention of the Russian influence on the city depicted in the shot - this city was established after the US purchased Alaska from Russia. I guess another hint is in order - Salmon capital of the world..... I predict a slight surge in Google traffic as I sign off with.... Good luck, Jan Edited June 18, 2009 by doubice
psquared Posted June 18, 2009 Share #1553 Posted June 18, 2009 That must be Ketchikan, Alaska!
