Dirk -

I shouldn't be surprised that you got it down to the town - I figured Madagascar would be as far as anyone would get.  Get thee to Pierre Marcolini for your reward.

Soantanana has a unique culture.  In a village of not much over 600 people, 600 of them are of an unusual Protestant faith.  We arrived midmorning on a Sunday specifically to observe their church service.  A few minutes before that most of the 600 hundred arrived en masse singing a hymn in Malagasy, in five or more part harmony, perfectly balanced, and with no choir leader in sight.  Many people greeted us, and they assigned the village seamstress (at the right edge of the 4th photo, in which Barbara is giving people Polaroid photos of themselves)  to be our caretaker.  After the service, with some of the most beautiful singing you can imagine, we interacted again with the villagers, and marched along with the mayor to an area where, in the tradition of Jesus, they washed our feet, much as the Bible sited Jesus did for his disciples.  After that we marched to the mayor's house where we dined with his family and other outsiders while the villagers sang to us from the outside.  (We thought it was uncouth of the other outsiders to arrive after the service, and then participate in the rest of the activities.)  In those few hours we got to feel very close to several of the people.  It was an unforgettable experience, and worth the long and confusing drive to find the village.

Your turn.

Thanks, Stuart, these Marcolini’s are going to be finished in no time.

It was not an easy location, but after one of your last posts it became obvious your photos were taken in Madagascar.
The cross on the building, the altar inside and the white clothes of the celebrants then led me to the Disciples of the white shepherds of Soatanana.

This time an easy one for a change.

Thank you, dirk.  Let's try this one, partly because I was blown away by the woman dancer up front.  If you'[re very nice I'll post other images of her.

Andreas - I understand why you thought that, but no, it's a bit more obscure.  I'm not certain how many people even know there is an annual February festival at this location.  The location is west of Rio.  Of course this gives me an opportunity to post photos of Vai (the dancer's name).  Her partner's name is Kimi.  I have more photos of her, too.
