wattsy Posted August 30, 2011 Share #8202 Posted August 30, 2011 No, not the 80. You were closer before.

wattsy Posted August 30, 2011 Share #8205 Posted August 30, 2011 Across the road from Mono Lake? Yes it is but I'd still like the road and nearest town.
Olsen Posted August 30, 2011 Share #8206 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) Ian, I drove that road back in 91' when driving across USA. I stayed the night at a small town called Lee Vining. This can't be far away from either Lee Vining. Along road '395'? Edited August 30, 2011 by Olsen
philipus Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8207 Posted August 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I also would have thought this is Hwy 1, but near Monterey or Carmel. If so, then the mountains could be Santa Lucia.
Olsen Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8208 Posted August 31, 2011 I would guess that the mountains in the background is part of the Tioga Pass (9.945 ft) with road '120' going between them, leading passing the peak Amelia Earhart (11,952 ft) and goes on to the senter of Yosemite National Park from the east. wattsy Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8209 Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) I'm actually not sure of the name of the peaks in the background but I'll take Olsen's word for it. He is right that the road is the 120 on the eastern side of Yosemite near Lee Vining (and the junction with the 395). If you turn and face the other direction you can see Mono Lake and the edge of the Great Basin Desert (as in the following snap). Over to you Olsen. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8210 Posted August 31, 2011 I was there in late May/early June 1991. Snow could be seen here and there even around Mono Lake, and there was this overwhelming smell from the flowers and vegetation. It was impossible to drive to the senter of Yosemite along '120' because the road was blocked with snow. A remarkable and beautiful place. I will come back with something.... wattsy Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8211 Posted August 31, 2011 It is a remarkable place - arguably more evocative than Yosemite itself.

Olsen Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8214 Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) Not the UK. Hell, no! The castle once housed Napoleon's soldiers.... Edited August 31, 2011 by Olsen
vertekijker Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8215 Posted August 31, 2011 Looks like a Northern European setting. Are we in Denmark? Koldinghus Castle? ------------- Frans
Olsen Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8216 Posted August 31, 2011 Frans, you are a true globetrotter! That was fast! It is indeed Koldinghus. Here a shot from the traditional post card angle. Your turn, Frans. PS. The general leading Napoleon's troops stay here in 1808 was Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. Later king of the union Sweden/Norway. The troops were freezing so much that they burned the castle down by accident. Welcome, dear visitor! vertekijker Posted August 31, 2011 Share #8217 Posted August 31, 2011 Thank you Olsen, You are far too complementary! I have never seen that castle, although I have visited Denmark. I noticed a Scandinavian feel to the setting. I thought that Denmark was the only Northern-European country with a connection to Napoleon. Then I typed in the keywords 'Denmark Castle Napoleon' in Google Images and voilà! Let me dive in my archives to come up with something. Cheers. --------- Frans

wattsy Posted September 1, 2011 Share #8219 Posted September 1, 2011 (edited) Just to narrow things down is it in the USA? Georgia, perhaps (though the trees suggest to me a bit further west)? Edited September 1, 2011 by wattsy
vertekijker Posted September 1, 2011 Share #8220 Posted September 1, 2011 Just to narrow things down is it in the USA? Georgia, perhaps (though the trees suggest to me a bit further west)? USA is right, and 'further west' is correct too. --------------- Frans
