Isaac Barrow in the Trinity College chapel? Barrow was the first Lucasian Professor and was succeeded by Newton (and much later by the now almost equally famous Stephen Hawking).

- That must be right! There is a similar done statue of sir Francis Bacon in the same chapel.

Excellent and exactly right - Sir Isaac Barrow it is, in the Chapel of Trinity College Cambridge. In fact, he resigned as Lucasian Professor to make way for Newton. Other famous occupants of this most prestigious Chair in the world were Charles Babbage (first computing machine), Sir George Airy (an integral that caused me much grief), Stokes (Navier-Stokes equations of Hydrodynamics), and (my favourite) Paul Dirac (relativistic quantum mechanics).

The baton goes to Ian.

Oh, and I am certain that there is an American Adam Smith, but he didn't write The Wealth Of Nations.:p

Thanks Michael.

Ok, just the name of the town will suffice.
